Sizzling Sports Day 2017

By Miss McGonigle

The sun was shining, the tents were out and the House spirit was evident for all to see - we celebrated the first sports day in our new Houses, which are named after the inspirational women Rosa Parks, JK Rowling, Marie Rambert, Dame Kelly Holmes, Benazir Bhutto and Margaret Hamilton.

Heads of Houses

The day kicked off with a quick assembly for the Heads of Houses to rile up the team spirit amongst their Houses and then straight into the field events, which ranged from javelin and discus to welly wanging and springboard long jump. We pride ourselves on running a very inclusive sports day that allows those who enjoy athletics to showcase their talents but also allows everyone to take part. Every student should have competed in two events each as per the rules of entry.

After a successful morning's field events there was a short lunch break and then we were straight into the track events, again ranging from 1500m and 100m to the bean bag on head and obstacle relay races. It was a fantastic afternoon on the track with all students getting behind their Houses and really into the spirit of the day.

It was a pleasure to see all students taking part in events and enjoying themselves with their friends and team mates while doing so. The sports day records are being checked to see if any were broken and this will be announced in due course. However, what we do know is the overall standings from the first sports day under the new House names, which were as follows:

Well done to Rowling - perhaps very apt after recently celebrating 20 years since the release of the first Harry Potter book!

A big thank you to all the students for taking part in the events and the day in general in excellent spirits and to the staff who made the day possible.

Students from across the school took part in our annual Sports Day, this year held on the 6th July. After months of inter-house competition, Rowling House came out victorious through their winning of the day.

This year, Sports Day not only showcased the incredible sporting talent in our school, but promoted activity to everyone in school through competitive as well as fun races.

The highlight of the day for many was the Staff Race, where teachers from across the school competed to show their support for their house, but in doing so showed the unity of the students and staff alike.

The day itself could not have been a success without the tremendous support of the Heads of Houses and students boosting morale via their support of their house; showing the incredible community spirit at Becky High.

The School would like to thank all the participants, the senior prefect team, Sports Leaders and of the PE department for making the event run so smoothly!
