Embark on a mythic, comic, classic adventure with the finest fellowship since Frodo set a hairy foot beyond the Shire.” David Solomons

Midnight Library by Matt Haig - The Scotsman Book review: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig - The Scotsman

Spectacular . A story of real and rare power - The Midnight Guardians is one of the best books I've read in years." Kiran Millwood HargraveSpectacular. A story of real and rare power – one of the best books I’ve read in years.” Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of THE GIRL OF INK AND STARS

The Guardian New network of European sleeper trains planned - The Guardian

As was made explicit when the story was wrung dry of teen pheromones and repurposed as Fifty Shades of Grey, what fuelled the Twilight phenomenon 15 years ago was the ecstasy of delayed gratification, and the pleasure to be found in pain. Following the death of their father, 12-year-old Col is evacuated during the Second World War, while his big sister Rose stays in London to help with the war effort. Learning that Rose is in terrible danger, Col embarks on a perilous journey to save her. The Midnight Guardian Series are young adult paranormal action/adventure novels appropriate for pre-teen and teen readers. The company is funded by French entrepreneurs, including the telecoms billionaire Xavier Niel, co-owner of Le Monde newspaper. Keira faces her greatest challenge yet…her driving test. Her best friend is acting strangely these days, but maybe its just that he can’t wrap his head around her unlikely new mogdoc ally or her new hot guardian mentor. He’ll have to deal because it’s time to take on a new ruler of the Mogdoc Empire. Nora Seed feels useless. Her cat is dead, her brother doesn’t seem to be interested in her, and she has been fired: nobody needs her. Late one evening, she tries to kill herself. This last week, though, asking people about midnight spaghetti revealed endless personal preferences, but I was glad to be reminded of two things in particular. No amount of screen presence can detract from the narrative being an overstuffed mess in need of a purge. Every episode, we spend time in the worlds created by the characters when they tell stories at night, but none (save perhaps Anya’s doppelganger nightmare The Two Danas) is as interesting as the events taking place at Brightcliffe. The series at first manages a balance between the two layers of fiction, but maddeningly tips the scale to luxuriate in the heavy-handed allegories of the stories they tell. After watching Sumpter deliver a devastating speech to his estranged mother that expertly walks the line between melodrama and melancholy, to subsequently see him flattened in a lame sci-fi concept is infuriating.
