One of the most amazing things I've ever eaten was lobster in a lobster sauce. The flavors were sophisticated, subtle yet complicated, challenging the diner to identify the source of this flavor or that one. Elfrida Phipps, once of London's stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life -- shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name -- still she finds herself lonely. From the start she was a pro. Her first eight novels under the pseudonym Jane Fraser each “had five cliff-hangers for a six-part magazine serial” and were published by Mills & Boon. By the time I became her literary agent in 1973, she was publishing short novels as Rosamunde Pilcher on the Collins Romance list. Her breakthrough came when a young American editor with St Martin’s Press, Tom Dunne, recognised her sparkling prose and pitch-perfect dialogue and launched her books in the US.

Just read Winter Solstice, loved it, was hoping she would have followed up on the lives of Sam and Carrie and Elfrida and Oscar in another novel but not to be, It is the first of her books I read, shall defo buy more of her work. Reply

September” is a stand alone novel written by Pilcher which was released in 1990. “September” features Noel (from “The Shell Seekers”) in a much smaller role. This novel takes place in Scotland, a beautiful place during a time that is unforgettable. Violet Aird, matriarch of the Aird clan is at the center of this tale, and is friend of Lord Balmerino (Archie Blair). Everyone in the book has something overcome, whether it be envy, greed, or jealousy. Violet knows that she can only watch over them. A dance in Pertshire brings everyone together, even a woman who ran away two decades ago.

All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. She has perfected the art of the cozy book. I adore her descriptions of places and people. Others might think it too much, but I ascribe more to the Proust style of writing than to the Hemingway style and so find her detailed descriptions of rooms and meals and gardens quite nice. I can't bear cold weather and yet after I read of one her books I find myself wishing to spend time in a snowy Scottish village. I also find myself getting hungry after her description of a meal or a shopping expedition. Of course I did expect a 'happy ending,' but not one that was achieved so easily. She did leave a few things dangling, which is good. The implication that there will still be problems ahead for the characters to solve is realistic. But I wish there had been more emphasis placed on the characters themselves actually solving their problems, rather than just waiting for a fortuitious coincidence to rescue them from difficulty. Readers may find so much enjoyment in Winter Solstice that they'll want to revisit some of Pilcher's other books, such as The Shell Seekers and Coming Home.” — USA Today Without having read the book, I just watched Winter Solstice, the movie. I can't help but saying that I found it to be a wonderful, touching and heartwarming movie, with a number of excellent actors and actresses of whom I had never heard before. From 1943 until 1946, Pilcher served with the Women's Royal Naval Service. On 7 December 1946, she married Graham Hope Pilcher, [5] a war hero and jute industry executive who died in March 2009. [7] They moved to Dundee, Scotland. They had two daughters and two sons. [8] Her son, Robin Pilcher, is also a novelist. [9]

I needed a go-to book, and I remembered that my GR friend Claude had recently read a few books by Rosamunde Pilcher, and had enjoyed them very much. Since our reading tastes are usually very similar, I thought I would try one. I’m glad I did! They are often most un-romantic. Pilcher wrote to her German editor, Siv Bublitz: “Marriage is like a job. A long, difficult job and both partners have to work harder than ever before.” Siv said she had never in her life known such a direct person. Es la primera vez que leo algo de Rosamunde Pilcher y me ha encantado. Esta es una novela reconfortante, agradable y amable, narrada de forma elegante y acogedora. The passing happened about thirty years after she encountered uncle Atticus at the breakfast table one Christmas morning. She was dressed to kill. Literary and as usual. In her case it meant that the strings of her corset might pop and leave an unsuspecting victim unconscious from the blow of her substantial physique escaping the ordeal. Yes, a dangerous possibility. And as usual her entrance was dramatic. She simply could not be anything else but the center of attention.Pilcher is known for her warm, compassionate tales of English family life. But this 1967 novella, available on audio for the first time, is not one of her better efforts. An orphan brought up by her Continue reading » Oscar Blundell tragically loses his wife and young daughter in a car crash and retreats to a house in Scotland that he owns half of, intending to spend a subdued Christmas with the support of his dear friend Elfrida. However it just so happens that there are a few people who end up taking up residence in the spare rooms of the big house over Christmas and it's a far cry from Oscar's original plans. However, now that he cannot hide himsef away in his cacoon of grief the healing process truly starts to begin. Intense, hilarious, provocative, and moving, A Long Way Down is a novel about suicide that is, surprisingly, full of life.

Aunt Birdie came to mind when I started reading this book. Elfrida Phipps, a retired actress, who equally and enthusiastically applied blue eye shadow each morning, moved to Dibton, a village in Hampshire, England with her dog Horace. She befriended the Blundell family but soon encountered a situation when Oscar Blindell's wife and child died in a serious car accident and Oscar asked Edith to move to Scotland with him as a supporting friend.

I’d never read anything by this author previously, and her work reminds me of Maeve Binchy’s. I look forward to reading more of her books. All tours are exclusive and the same price for between one and seven people. Your booking is considered confirmed once we send out your confirmation. Some did not like the novel, finding that none of the characters were interesting or relatable at all and could not connect with the material. There were other moments that felt a little repetitious and a little too long for them. Some found parts of the novel to feature conversations that were too cryptic for them; almost as though part of the novel were missing and more information was needed. The enduringly popular Pilcher ( Coming Home, 1995, etc.) holds fast to a theme that has all but disappeared from American fiction: The healing comforts of domesticity and companionship. Reading this book set in Scotland in Winter could make me fell chilly in a very hot Florida. There is also a section set in Cornwall which is my favorite part of the UK. Love Rosamunde Pitcher and
