Most bike helmets use some form of expanded polystyrene, or EPS foam, formed around a core of another, tougher material to provide cushioning in the event of an impact. If you wish to return your bike to us please keep it in the box it arrived in and call us on 01772 644340 and we will arrange a collection. The Mips system is designed to provide added safety for helmets in many accidents. For certain impacts, the Mips system can reduce harmful rotational motion that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head.

Vents at the brow line help warm air to be drawn up and away from your goggles to eliminate fogging, while allowing We didn’t find any issues with the features…the chin strap is quite comfortable and the length, width, size and shape of the visor was just right. Initially, the ear coverage looked like it might be disconcerting, but was a total afterthought. Fortunately no crashes have been had, but the idea of a softer inner layer seems helpful in that event. Lastly, the channel for the goggle strap not only serves a purpose, but aesthetically it looks quite nice. OverallOverall, the shape isn’t unlike Giro’s Switchblade helmet with the chin bar removed. The Switchblade isn’t well known for being a light or breezy helmet though, so Giro have gone to some lengths to chisel off the grams and give the Tyrant decent ventilation. There are 14 vents in total, which includes the two horizontal vents over the ear-holes to prevent you from steaming up too much.

The main thing is to ensure you can get the helmet sitting securely on your head so there are no pressure points or undue movement. While two layer EPS helmets have been prohibitively large in the past, the Tyrant pulls that form factor way down. It was one of the most form fitting and sleek helmets we tried this year. The ear areas are hollowed out with minimal padding on the lower edge to allow the helmet to sit very close the head allowing good airflow. Two different materials are used to manage impact energy: One layer is EPS which is well-suited to high-speed In-Mold Construction fuses a tough polycarbonate outer shell with the helmet's impact-absorbing foam liner. The fusion process allows for better ventilation systems, making in-mold helmets lighter and cooler than traditional helmets.

In terms of coverage and feel, the Tyrant really does connect the dots between a full-face and a half-shell helmet. The extra coverage around the ears, combined with the cheek pads, give it a cosy feel and a secure fit. The deep bowl-like profile is more akin to a full-face, just without the embarrassing hassles of when you go to eat a banana.

With its wrap-around head coverage, goggle compatibility and innovative new MIPS Spherical technology, the Tyrant Mountain Bike Helmet breaks new ground when it comes to comfort and multi-discipline performance for progressive riders. The P. O. V. Plus Visor has an adjustment mechanism that allows the visor to be adjusted up and down in 3 steps. In addition, the visor can be pushed up so far that the goggle can be pushed onto the helmet during a break, for example. The adjustment is easy to make with one hand and while driving. Tool-Free, Bolt-On Visor - Easily adjustable without need for tools or extra fiddling, and offers plenty of vertical adjustment to stage goggles when you're not wearing them. The visor is fairly stout – it’s installed/removed by two tool free, ergonomic thumb screws. On the trail Rotational force is responsible for a large number of injuries, including brain damage, so while it makes manufacturing, and thus retail, prices more expensive, many manufacturers now incorporate MIPS into their helmets.

and stability. Using a patented design that suspends the helmet just slightly off the top of the skull, Roc Loc® Air While the impact resistance of helmets is covered by a number of test standards to ensure they perform when they’re needed, manufacturers have been introducing extra technology to try to improve on this.

The two-piece shell combines a tough outer hard shell with a polycarbonate lower shell permanently fused to the linerThe Giro Tyrant is a well thought out half-face for some serious, gravity-fed riding. It can get a little hot compared to proper half-face lids but it's comfy, great in winter and a particularly good choice for downhill laps on e-bikes, where the weight and heat retention are much smaller problems. While the extra coverage of trail-style helmets is more than welcome, it does get in the way of airflow, which can mean a much warmer and sweatier head in hot weather or when you’re pushing really hard. The revolutionary Roc Loc® Air Fit System has the same outstanding features as the Roc Loc® 5, but in addition to that, it dramatically increases airflow and ventilation inside the helmet. The unique design creates a small air cushion between the helmet shell and the head, so that the wind can flow and cool without disturbing the ride without sacrificing fit and comfort. A new level of fit, comfort and ventilation that can only come from Giro.
