Sammy is described as being creative and talkative and enjoys taking pictures of her friends having fun. She is an extrovert and loves art. Her favorite color is light blue and her favorite food are acorns. Her favorite season is Summer. She views the lives of her friends and guests at the lodge through her camera lens. A near-identical character named Sammy was in the comic strip up until late 2005, where a story line shows a mirrored dimension where RJ, Elrod ("Like Verne is any better?"), and Hammy resided. The other animals in the forest couldn’t believe it either! They watched in awe as Sammy scurried up and down trees with ease. Some even asked him to teach them how to climb too! Before long, Sammy had reached the top of the tree - something that once seemed impossible! He looked down at all the nuts below him and felt very proud of himself.

Hammy's big moment comes during the final battle, when the family is trapped inside the Hedge between Vincent on one side and Gladys and Dwayne on the other. RJ and Verne devise a plan to feed an energy drink to Hammy, which they had refrained from doing prior because he was already hyper enough as is. Once he drinks it, he goes crazy, and becomes so fast that time around him slows to a crawl. During this pause, Hammy activates the Depelter Turbo on Gladys and Dwayne, and grabs a cookie on the way out. He's a red squirrel with green eyes, and two large front teeth. Though his age is unknown, he's visibly young. Aside from Lou and Penny's kids, he's the smallest member of the family, and very skinny. His fur is red-orange with white on his front and face, but his hands and feet are a darker brown. His tail is large and bushy.

He knew that unless he came to the rescue Sammy would surely die. So he invited him into his warm drey and shared his winter store of food with him. Sammy was so grateful and realized how selfish and stupid he had been. He was so sorry for the way in which he had behaved and promised that in future he would prepare for the winter like all sensible animals should.Though they only talk to each other one time in the script, Hammy is seen around Heather's company somewhat often, so it can be assumed that they're friends of some caliber. Sammy the squirrel loved to play with his friends in the forest. They would chase each other up and down the trees, collecting nuts and berries along the way. But there was one thing that scared Sammy more than anything else - climbing trees! In the short film "Hammy's Boomerang Adventure", RJ hosts his own show called "RJ's Wide World of Nature". He and the porcupine kids sneak up on Hammy and secretly expose him to a boomerang to see how he behaves with it.

Whenever his friends suggested they climb a tall tree to collect some extra nuts for winter, Sammy’s heart would race with fear. He just couldn’t bring himself to do it.
