YOU WANT TO SUCCEED. Badly. But the more you are, the harder it’s going to be. So you’ll be playing 10-minute game after 10-minute game.

One last note: Escape is definitely going on my best games of 2012 list — I especially made time to write this review so it'd be eligible! — but it's not for everyone. Some people just don't like the stress of making decisions under pressure. And some people just don't like rolling dice. (Okay, I'm not sure I know many of those, but I imagine it's true.) If you can't handle lots of noisy die-rolling and shouting for help and tile-flipping, then you may want to pass on this particular ancient temple. For the rest of you, though, it's time to Escape! Players have only ten minutes to escape from the collapsing temple, so don't dawdle. Every second you delay brings you a step closer to being entombed. Different than other cooperative board games, you don’t have a lot of time to talk through options. While everyone rolls their dice and explores simultaneously and independently, players can benefit from being in the same rooms with one another. Whether that is to pool dice to get rid of more gems, or to save each other from the curse dice they roll, you’ll want to stay close.

The Actions

Lost dice. In this game it’s not unusual that dice go off the table. With this curse, those dice are lost for the rest of the game! Even if you manage to cure yourself, those dice are lost. All explorers start on the beginning tile, with only two others visible. As you roll and move through rooms – matching dice to the symbols in those rooms – new tiles are placed and the board builds itself as you go. When you enter a room that has gems, you must roll a certain combination of symbols to collect them. When you finally find the exit, you and all your fellow explorers together must roll however many gems have NOT been collected. Your friends, who had barely played anything else than Monopoly, Sorry or Twister — and that’s before they had kids— will absolutely enjoy the sheer fun of discovering and playing this. I really enjoy this game. It’s fast, easy to learn and chaotic every time. The expansions allows for an additional player, and introduces more curses, new treasures and new illusion rooms which disappears from the map during gameplay. I really recommend that as well as the promotions that are avaliable. They each provide variety to the game and new challenges.

Many good games contain a strong mechanic paired with a good story. The goal of the game is to let you experience the story with the mechanic. And if any game is dedicated to replicating the experience of the story, that game is Escape!. There are a couple of other co-op games out there that have players take their turns simultaneously, but not too many of them are as smooth as Escape. You do have a lot to think about as you are rolling your dice and moving, but it’s also pretty easy to recognize when you should be helping yourself and when you should be helping your teammates. You can change up the game by adding one or both of modules: Curses and Treasures. You remove the 13 basic chamber tiles (leaving the start, exit, and the four tiles that have the 1, 2, 3 gems) and put in the Curses and Treasures chamber tiles. Some chambers have a purple mask, some chambers have a gold treasure icon, and some have both. The Treasures module can make it a little easier by providing some bonuses, and the Curses module makes things harder. Really cursed. Normally a blessing allows you to re-roll up to two cursed dice. With this curse, you may only re-roll one cursed die. What would be too much : Robinson Crusoe, while being a great cooperative game, there’s just too much strategy and not enough action. The 10 minute timeframe immediately brings to mind Space Alert, another timed coop. Escape: The Curse of the Temple is a much lighter, more casual game than Space Alert. You can have the game setup, rules explained, and game started in under 10 minutes (often Space Alert requires that just to get the board arranged). As one would expect, this ease of learning/play means Escape: The Curse of the Temple doesn’t grab you quite the same way. I don’t feel nearly as much tension, and there isn’t as great of a need to communicate. This doesn’t mean Escape: The Curse of the Temple is a bad game or should be avoided, it’s just lighter, and thus more accessible. Example: Frank has rolled his dice and uses the two adventurer icons to enter the next chamber. 2. Discover a chamber Example: Frank has managed to escape and gives one of his dice to Ani (red), who can use it immediately. We have people in our gaming group that don’t enjoy that aspect of it, but I find the immersive feelings integral to the experience. That’s the challenge: you don’t just have to escape, but you have to escape NOW.

Escape: The Curse of the Temple gets bonus points for including two expansions with the base game. The game plays perfectly well without them (and this is how I would guess most people will play it), but it’s great to have a built-in ability to up the difficulty when the time comes. Magic Maze takes the top spot on the list of board games like Escape: The Curse of the Temple because it is another fantastic real-time title where everyone needs to make it out of a situation alive. Here you are silently cooperating with others to rob a labyrinthine shopping mall before time runs out.Even though there are other cooperative board games that my group likes a bit more than Escape, it will definitely be staying in our collection since it works great as a filler game and it is one of the better cooperative family games out there. It also works quite well as a two-player game. For all the hesitating you’re going to experience the next time you’re figuring out which game you want to buy, remember my words: And while you may not be able to directly help your younger kids or siblings with their dice rolls and choices, the basic game play is simple enough that they can have a great time joining in and rolling all their dice along with the family. Exception: If you are playing alone or with a second player, insert the exit tile in the middle of the draw pile. Although each game only takes ten minutes, you'll rarely play it only once – particularly if the temple keeps collapsing on top of you. And even if you escape easily, it’s straightforward to ramp up the difficulty – just add more gems to the gem depot or swap the basic chambers for the curses and treasures versions.

I’m really impressed how tense this game is. I played it with three players, two players and alone. And everytime there was shouting. Yes, even in my solo play I shouted at the **** dice to do what I want (not that it helped much). I like this game very much and would recommend it to everyone who doesn’t have a problem with time pressure games. I enjoy playing tile laying games where you explore areas and this did fit the bill. It is played in real time and I have played 2,3 & 4 player games of it. A game will take 10 mins from start to finish as each player frantically rolls their dice AT THE SAME TIME over and over again to get the Symbols they require to move around and complete tasks in the labyrinth. Escape: If you make it to the exit chamber, you must roll as many keys as there are gems left in the depot plus one — by yourself. So if there are two gems left in the depot, you must roll three keys to escape. If you escape successfully, you may give one of your dice to another player still in the temple and they can start using it immediately. Now that those rules are out of the way you’re probably asking ‘how do I play?’ It’s fairly simple; you roll dice. The game comes with some custom dice and each face represents an action you are able to perform or store. A green adventurer, which appears twice on the die – you need these to move from room to room, and to activate some gems.
