They do offer a snapshot of the era, touching on the social issues of the time just as Dickens did in his fiction (but without the silly names). Finlay character, the hero of a series of stories that served as the basis for the long-running BBC television and radio series entitled Dr.

They are a little corny to the modern reader- but as with many fictional pieces written in a past era - it is shortsighted to place modern values on them. This quote needs a citation] The outcry from the viewing public was immediate, and sackfuls of mail were dispatched to Cronin's home in Switzerland. The stories were later collected and republished under several titles, including Adventures of a Black Bag, Dr Finlay of Tannochbrae, Further Adventures of a Country Doctor and Dr Finlay's Casebook. This article includes a list of general references, but it lacks sufficient corresponding inline citations. Dickens, it must be remembered, also often wrote his stories for massed market consumption in magazine form. The BBC went on to dramatise these stories on both television and radio during the 1960s and 1970s, with the television adaptation drawing weekly audiences of 12 million viewers. Cronin has written much better books I feel but nevertheless I did enjoy watching the series on TV once more.

Finlay may find himself helping with a surprise pregnancy and the next he could be working out a solution to Dr. Yes the writing is old-fashioned, and yes some of the words are archaic now, but this is a delightful account of life in a small town. We were too shy to speak to him and we had to get off at our station when I assume he went on to Glasgow. Simply Media TV released the first series of Dr Finlay's Casebook in March 2013, and the second series was released in April 2014. As an AJ Cronin enthusiast, I find this volume to be in contrast to the dark agonies of his novels, albeit more sharp-edged than the typical smarmy "Country Doctor" collections of say, Patrick Taylor.

Not sentimental, but kindly, and Dr Finlay’s responses and reactions also human, sometimes impatient and angry, though with utmost effort keeping a professional demeanour.

Six years later he published The Citadel which brought attention to the incompetence of medical practice and helped incite the establishment of the NHS.It's possible it was the author's fault, but it did grate a little - up to that point, I had presumed the second book followed on from the first. I will try to look back with fondness on book one - but only if I succeed in completely forgetting book two. This was a delight to read, although I kept hearing Bill Simpson's and Andrew Cruikshank's voices in my head. Cronin wrote two collections of stories which are recorded here together: Adventures of a Black Bag and Dr Finlay of Tannochbrae.
