What does Ben make of the signature tyre of the most successful downhill rider out there? Here’s his two pence on the Maxxis Assegai. In pretty much every circumstance they have been predictable, confidence inspiring and dependable. The Assegai would be my tyre of choice if I was building a bike and wanted a tyre to run all year in the UK.

Already around 1k km on this tyre. I´m using it on my Nordest Bardino 2.0 hardtail on the rear, the grip is excellent under any conditions, even more in wet and muddy as is normal here in Ireland. Planning on buying another one for front.”MXT00017200, MXT00064500, MXT00097400, MXT00097500, MXT00163000, MXT00163100, MXT00163200, MXT00163300, MXT00172400, MXT00195500, MXT00195600, MXT00202400, MXT00202700, MXT00202900, MXT00203100, MXT00308100, MXT00308200 You might look at the tall side knobs and assume that they might fold over under heavy cornering, but this was not the case. They are sturdy enough to support the hardest of riders and have enough depth to really penetrate all but the sloppiest conditions. As you lean in, they really begin to bite and they reward an active rider who can maximise the cornering potential of such an aggressive tyre. Who's this for: Riders who prioritise grip above all else, even at the expense of rolling resistance. This is a beefy tyre that will instil confidence on the steepest and roughest of terrain. Our EXO+ construction combines two of our best puncture protection materials: SilkShield and EXO. The SilkShield layer runs from bead-to-bead with a layer of EXO along the sidewalls. Combined, these two materials create EXO+ which improves tread puncture protection by 27%; sidewall durability by 51%; and resistance to pinch flats by 28%. Tyre Construction

Put an Assegai on the front of your bike and then ride all year, in any conditions, on any trails and it will grip for miles and give you maximum confidence. The end. They really are that good. However, if you want a bit more detail, then read on… Previously the unicorn (yes I named my bike) was shod in Scwhalbe Nobby Nics in EVO Trailstar Snakeskin form. Not a bad tire, but not great for what I wanted to. I’ll get that and draw comparisons [as] I go. Ben has ridden nearly every version of the Maxxis Assegai over the past year. Here is what he has to say about the GOAT’s signature tyre. While this tyre may not make you ride quite like Greg Minnaar, it's going to absolutely rip up those downhill runs with more grip than you ever thought possible.

In pretty much every circumstance they have been predictable, confidence-inspiring and dependable. The Assegai would be my tyre of choice if I was building a bike and wanted a tyre to run all year in the UK.”–WideOpenMountainBike.com, September 2020 The bottom line is that the Assegai is a true fit and forget tyre for the UK. Whether it is baked hard or soaking wet, you know that you will have plenty of predictable grip. If you are riding uplifts or DH then consider running a pair of Assegai for maximum grip and confidence.Liquid sealants should only be used in the following types of tyres: Tubeless Road, tubular, and tubeless Ready. The use of liquid sealants in any other Maxxis tyre will void the warranty. Compound I just got mine after listening to my friend go on and on about how much he loves his Assegai. He’s had it for a year, and it still has lots of life, and cornering and grip are both significantly improved. In the meantime, I keep wearing through Schwalbe tires. So…I’m switching the DH bike over to Assegai front and rear, and the enduro over to Assegai front and something else rear. Only downside: They’re heavy.” I’ve always use DHF for front and wanted [to] try [an] Assegai out of curiosity, turns out it performs as good as DHF, abit better in cornering.”

Terms & Conditions Apply. And that leaves me talking about my all-time favorite tire, the High Roller. Maxxis' engineers and I came up with a remodeled High Roller side knob with very similar characteristics to the original. But with the support the extra tooth gives you, you have the ultimate wingman when cutting hard on a flat turn. Finally, I took the height of the knobs from the Shorty. The knobs are well-supported, so the extra height aggressively bites into loam and dry, dusty conditions.” For trail and enduro riding you can’t beat pairing them up with the new Dissector or the classic DHRII on the rear. Like all Maxxis, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for.
