Description

In Black Hawk Down, author Mark Bowden presents a riveting, minute-by-minute account of the battle, told from the perspective of the soldiers who fought for their lives in the narrow, dusty streets. It is hard not to be thrilled by the hyper-competence of the Delta operators, masters of a lethal form of art. Two Black Hawk Helicopters were shot down by RPGs and the situation escalated into the “longest sustained firefight involving American troops since the Vietnam War. They describe feeling weirdly out of place, as though they did not belong here, fighting feelings of disbelief, anger, and ill-defined betrayal, this cannot be real. In my interviews with those who were in the thick of the battle, they remarked again and again how much they felt like they were in a movie, and had to remind themselves that this horror, the blood, the deaths, was real.

The next time I hear that our "elite forces" will be sent into battle, I will be hard pressed to forget that though highly skilled and trained, they are probably not much older that nineteen, twenty, or twenty one. Bowden describes on an intimately personal level the minute by minute stories of the soldiers in this conflict, the mistakes, the second guessing and of course, the heroism. Estimates for Somali fatalities vary widely depending on the source, and range from hundreds to possibly even thousands of people. His rifle may have been heavier and comparatively awkward and delivered a mean recoil, but it damn sure knocked a man down with one bullet, and in combat, one shot was often all you got.Written like a gripping novel this book is startling in its telling and reveals both great bravery, arrogance and failings by the the US Forces in Somalia.

It would have helped to have a map of Somalia, of Mogadishu, particularly a street map to provide some bearings. Black Hawk helicopters were flown by the elite pilots of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, also known as the Night Stalkers.Private First Class Todd Blackburn was the baby on Eversmann’s bird, a kid fresh out of Florida high school who had not yet even been to Ranger school.

The observation birds were equipped with video cameras and radio equipment that would relay the action live to General Garrison and the other senior officers in the Joint Operations Center (JOC) back at the beach. Molto d'impatto e con testimonianze che ben evidenziano i crimini di guerra del reich usa nel mondo, oltre allo scarso addestramento e prep di soldati e ufficiali e al loro totale disinteresse per le vittime civili. The book was accompanied by a video, Somalia: Good Intentions, Deadly Results, produced by KVR Video, that was aired on CNN on 24 March 1999 in a 57-minute version, as Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War; it later won an Emmy. Authoritative, gripping, and insightful, Black Hawk Down is destined to become a classic of war reporting. I had heard of this author from my mother so decided to track down this audio book as it is another non fiction audio book for my collection.Others were self-improvers, young men who had found themselves adrift after high school, or in trouble with drugs, booze, the law, or all three. Perhaps the best book ever written on military special operation forces (SOF) in a combat environment, Black Hawk Down provides unseen view into the world of both overt and covert warfare.

has told the story with a driving narrative in a treatment that proceeds with dignity like the measured tread of history, yet glows with the passion of a memoir. In the warren-like streets of Mogadishu, receiving directions that arrived woefully short of real-time, men became disoriented, lost. Waiting for the code word for launch, which today was “Irene,” they were a formidable sum of men and machines. There are men who are scared, and find it hard to function; there are men who, in the thick of the fighting, kill noncombatants; there are men who feel guilty; there are men who are cool and professional, dropping their enemies with brisk, emotionless efficiency; there are men like Specialist Nelson, who describe a kind of super-awareness, an intense experience of existing only in this single moment, a state he likened to being “inside the tube of a big wave” while surfing.Their target was a three-story house of whitewashed stone with a flat roof, a modern modular home in one of the city’s few remaining clusters of intact large buildings, surrounded by blocks and blocks of tin-roofed dwellings of muddy stone. Other Delta Force members also consulted for the book, but did not allow the use of their real names.
