Again, orange urine can indicate that you need to drink more fluid or you’ve eaten something orange but it may be due to other more serious problems: Any vitamin that’s mixing with your pee is a water-soluble vitamin, and any amount of it that your body doesn’t need simply gets excreted through the urine.”

Dr Juliet McGrattan explores why urine might turn all the colours of the rainbow, and what it indicates about our underlying health. I was let out of the car at the Sgiogarstaidh road end by my dear wife at 12.30pm on what appeared to be a short break in the weather. Within 30 minutes I arrived at Bonny Cuisheadair which, despite the "Western Isles Walking Guide's" assurance that it was full of ruins, turned out to be quite well cared for with well maintained huts some of them surrounded by mown grass and planters. Some wag had also placed a sign warning the unsuspecting walker of koala bears! Cathy may have finished with formal institutional education at 15 but her engagement with: Freirean Training for Transformation; Popular Education; Tenants’ Groups; Trades Unions; Workers’ Educational Association, a variety of middle class professional and academic allies, and so on, clearly more than made up for that. Indeed, Cathy’s high degree of practical know-how combined with critical literacy may have been because – rather than in spite - of finishing institutional education at 15. TL; DR/VERDICT/SHORT ANSWER: A) urobilin! B) Lay off the beets! C) If your diet is beet-free, see a doctor. Is It True That You Can Drink Your Urine? The first edition of the guide, at the turn of the 21st century, was published as a distinctive A5 glossy bound book, a format that has been retained to this day. Subsequent editions have been vastly expanded, with shops, bars, nightclubs, restaurants, visitor centres, transport, museums and art galleries all represented. The current guide design now has a distinctive yellow cover and is referred to as 'The Wee Yellow Book'.

This delightful story will strike a chord with many, adults and children alike – the desire to be free, close to nature, and enjoying a life of adventure. Have you eaten a lot of borscht recently? You may be suffering from beeturia, which is the technical term for peeing red or pink after eating a lot of beets. I am not making this up. Ingesting enormous quantities of strawberries or rhubarb can produce the same effect. The yellow colour of urine comes largely from the presence of urobilin, also known as urochrome. Urobilin, which is yellow, is produced as the body breaks down old red blood cells that are no longer needed. Rhabdomyolysis – muscle breakdown due to excessive exercise, dehydration and trauma to muscles. It can also be caused by some illicit drugs, seizures and inherited medical conditions.

From Cuisheadar however, thing got bleak. The most noticeable thing about the walk is that, after Cuisheadar, the path disappears. Secondly, the "waymarkers" also seem to disappear; being painted green and yellow (the same colour as the moor). What followed was a very arduous bog slog over some of the worst moorland I have ever walked (I've walked a lot). Despite careful inspection of the terrain, I fell waist deep in deep bogs at least twice; the second time loosing one of my walking poles. Wondering what the colour of your urine means? If we pay any attention at all when we have a wee, we usually expect to see urine of various shades of yellow. It’s easy to understand why suddenly passing green, red or even blue urine might be alarming. Sometimes urine changes colour and it can take you by surprise as well as trigger concerns about what might have caused it. I managed to reach "the road to nowhere" and met my nearest and dearest at precisely 4pm at the "Traigh beag" carpark in the middle of a downpour.

Success!

After the medal was presented to Michael Stewart, County Secretary Leslie Crawford announced the 2007 trophy winners. Heather Marcovitch received her PhD in English in Victorian Literature from the University of Florida. She teaches Victorian literature, children’s literature, literary theory, and essay writing at Red Deer Polytechnic in Alberta, Canada, where her research focuses on the writing and culture of the late Victorian period in England, especially as it pertains to The Yellow Book and the Bodley Head publishing company. She is the author of The Art of the Pose: Oscar Wilde’s Performance Theory, the co-editor of two books on television studies, and of articles on late Victorian and modernist writers, on The Yellow Book and on the afterlives of Oscar Wilde. She is currently under contract with MacFarland Press to write a companion volume to Oscar Wilde’s writings. Her essay on Ella D’Arcy will be published in Cahiers victoriens et edouardiens this spring. Her current research focuses on George Egerton’s relationship to John Lane and she is developing a longer project about secular Judaism, literature, and the Victorian fin de siècle. Old or ‘stale’ blood has a browner colour than fresh blood and can result from any of the causes of red urine listed above. No, bright yellow urine doesn’t mean that you’re not absorbing your vitamins. Any vitamin that’s mixing with your pee is a water-soluble vitamin, and any amount of it that your body doesn’t need simply gets excreted through the urine. That means your body is taking in what it needs. Cathy was a close personal and family friend, so I have written this brief tribute to her with great personal sadness and ongoing grief but also with deep gratitude and joy for having had the privilege of Cathy sharing part of her life and work with me and for being a mentor, ally, inspiration and colleague as well as critical friend.
