but without this author my childhood would have been a sad and lonely place, from her stories for young children the wishing chair and come to the circus, to the fabulous famous five, St. When he is told about the Faraway Tree he's naturally skeptical but they manage to convince him they're on the level and then he can't wait to see it. I don't remember very much of it (I fear I may not really have been paying attention), but there is one incident that stuck in my memory. For the 1% of you who don't know, Jo, Bessie, and Fanny (yes this is the non PC edition) move from the city to the country with their parents.

Next day they are off to the Enchanted Wood and Dick hears the leaves on the trees making a soft sound in the breeze — "Wisha, Wisha, Wisha!I point this out ahead of reading - IT IS NOT SEXIST, it was just a reflection of the times when Blyton wrote these fantastic books. The Faraway Tree is so tall it reaches into the clouds and up in these clouds a new land swings by (like a rotating turntable of lands) every couple of days. Produced originally in 1943, this title is a popular one and was described very aptly by a fan as "One of Enid Blyton's most enchanting tales. When Joe, Beth and Frannie move to the countryside, they discover that their new house lies next to the Enchanted Wood!

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Many dangerous, fascinating and even hilarious situations occur as we accompany the children on their adventures and sometimes a visit to the tree will become so involved that it may take up two or more chapters during which the characters stray into deeper and darker circumstances. The children have many adventures in these lands, closing out the book with a day spent in perhaps the best of all, Birthday Land. Given the recent furore over rewriting Roald Dahl, I wonder if we'll ever get justice for the Faraway Tree? Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. There have been a couple of Faraway Tree games over the years, including the jigsaw puzzle produced by BeStime as part of their numbered series throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and a card game.

Enid Blyton may well be responsible for me trying to end each chapter of my novels with a cliffhanger - she does it so well and I've lost count of the number of times my son begged me for, 'just one more chapter, mummy! Enid Blyton inspired me to read as a young child and to this day I suspect is the reason I love to read. This is no ordinary tree - it is home to more magical lands full of elves, pixies, talking creatures and wonderful adventures than the children ever imagined possible!Jo has a rather trying time in one place they visit because it's the Land of Topsy-Turvy and when he is rather aggressive with a policeman he's immediately turned upside down and has to walk on his hands. But in this and some other modern editions, the corporal punishment – and any sense of threat – has just been silently removed. Despite their connections with the Fairy-world his Faraway Tree friends can't take the spell off so poor Jo has to stay topsy-turvy and as this would make it a little difficult to get down the tree again he stays the night at Moon-Face's and they all hope that the next land which comes along might have some remedy for his plight.
