START WITH 90 DEGREES SO A 40 D PITCH ROOF= 40d PLUMB/ TOP/ RIDGE CUT, THE SEAT CUT WILL BE 50 DEGREES ( 40D +50D=90DEGREES). So a 20 foot wide building with a 40 degree pitch = 40 d ridge angle and 50 d seat angle (wall plate) just square off the 50 d to get the bird mouth ( 1/3 depth of rafter).
