Why would anyone use these over the standard Split Pads? These seem like they’d be less comfortable. The controller is missing a few features found in Joy-Con controllers. It doesn't offer rumble, motion controls, NFC support, or the IR camera. The Split Pad is powered by the Switch console itself, which means it doesn't work when detached from the tablet. The Split Pad Compact is strictly for handheld play, but that's really not a criticism. It does what it sets out to do extremely well.

Split Hori Reveals New Pokémon-Themed Designs For The Switch Split

I've been using the Split Pad Pros for the last year or so happily as the original Joy Cons are way too small and cramped for my hands (I've got pretty averaged sized hands for an adult male, typically a size medium for most gloves). To me the Split Pad Pros are very comfortable, much closer to using something like an Xbox controller. I use the Switch exclusively in handheld mode and was using them with both a standard Switch as well as an OLED version.

Plus, I overwhelmingly prefer tabletop mode when out and about (and the slightly larger screen of the OLED model makes a big difference), which is another deal-breaker. The Satisfye Nintendo Switch grip has been one of our favorites for some time, and the updated version of it, the ZenGrip Pro 3, is absolutely the one to buy, as this model works for both Switch OLED and the original Switch.

Split Pad Pro vs Compact: which Joy-Con alternative is Hori Split Pad Pro vs Compact: which Joy-Con alternative is

The Split Pad Compact is ideal for those who think other Joy-Con replacements are simply too large. This was my primary complaint with the Split Pad Pro. It was a tad too bulky. Nintendo Switch grips come in all shapes and sizes. Some are designed exclusively for the regular Switch or Switch OLED, while others, like the stellar Satisfye ZenGrip Pro, are compatible with both models. Naturally, the significantly smaller Switch Lite requires its own separate grip, but there are great options for the handheld-only Switch, too. RubyCarbuncle eevee is another one that it is extremely overrated and appears every where. The charmander line, the mews and gengar are other examples. HD rumble though, now there's something that I actually use and value. That, and the type of games that I would desire a d-pad for aren't the type of games that I would need a gyro and camera for anyways. I'm 100% going to get some of these. Having big hands I struggle using the joy-con for log sessions handheld. I'm also not fussed with no group, rumble etc. Always turn of rumble and only use gyro with my pro controller.Whether you're in the market for a grip for Switch OLED or the regular Switch, we'd recommend opting for the ZenGrip Pro 3 since it's compatible with both and is available for the same price. The Snap Grip is the smallest of the three and has a unique ridged design. The rounded Plus Grip is aimed at those who want some added bulk. Meanwhile, the Trigger Grip mimics the feel of a conventional controller, with a contoured design that probably suits most Switch users. Essentially, you're getting three different grips in one, so chances are at least one of them will be a great fit for you. Since the grip has a power bank inside, it is heavier than the other grips on this list. The bulkiness that it adds works in its favor when it comes to ergonomics, though. The increased depth combined with rounded handles makes the Switch more comfortable to hold for longer play sessions. As the main draw here is extended playtime, that's certainly a good thing.

HORI Split Pad Compact for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo

Hori have just released Split Pad Pro Attachment Set where you buy the big controllers and a middle bit that makes the Split Pad Pro into a wired controller with a headphone/microphone port. (I haven't seen the middle bit sold separately yet.) Watch out for the Split Pad Fit get sold with this middle bit in the future maybe. If these were proper fully-featured Joy-Con, I would absolutely leap at these, but as they are, it’s a hard pass. Rumble often makes such a tangible difference in games, especially as I have been mostly playing classic DOOM over the last couple of months, so much so that playing it on PC again without the tactility of rumble feels like a downgrade! (though both platforms have their pros and cons) Funny how they only mention "don't include HD Rumble, NFC an IR camera or wireless functions", but what bugs me the more is gryo control, and they don't say a thing about the controller not having it, like if it was less important. Through long gaming sessions, we made use of the more comfortable controls and ergonomics, however, we couldn’t shake the feeling that the controller could have used slightly higher quality materials, as it ends up feeling incredibly light. Should you buy it? GENGAR!? ON A CONTROLLER!? SOLD! Also nice to see mimkyu. And is that a case to go along with them? Double sold! In case you missed it, these Joy-Con-like controllers are a follow-up to Hori's Switch Split Pad Pro, and are officially releasing here in the west as the Switch Split Pad Compact. They'll be available here in two different colours, but over in Japan there are four - and now even more options to choose from!

Hori Split Pad Compact Is An Incredible Switch Handheld

As with Satisfye's previous model, the ZenGrip Pro is extremely lightweight--it doesn't make the console feel any heavier (in fact, because it makes holding the Switch so much easier, it almost feels lighter). The bottom of the grip has two hooks for additional console support, and they also allow the Switch to stand securely upright on its own, with enough room for the charging cable to run underneath. Honestly, I'm not too impressed with them. They are more comfortable in the hand than the Joy Cons, but still not very comfortable. Hands are still positioned with the thumbs too vertical instead of angled, which feels cramped. The ABXY buttons on the Compact have a little bit of a concave design rather than the convex buttons of the Pros, which creates a little sharp edge that irritates my thumb. Kind of like the old NES/SNES controllers I used as a kid. Also, my ring/pointer fingers on the right controller rest on another sharp edge which is irritating. The Pros are big enough that you can rest the whole Switch in the meat of your palms and then keep your fingers loose for playing, where the Compact like the Joy Cons I have to kind of squeeze my fingers to keep the Switch steady. If you regularly play your Nintendo Switch in handheld mode, the absolute best accessory you can buy is a detachable grip. Though the Switch is one of Nintendo's best gaming consoles ever, not everyone finds the default form factor very comfortable--especially when playing for hours in a row. Thankfully, there are third-party accessories that drastically improve the Nintendo Switch's ergonomics. We've rounded up a handful of the best Nintendo Switch grips available in 2023.
