It REALLY was. The protagonist is a human female who has just finished grad school with a mountain of student loan debt. And the best, most effective method of extracting this is by female technician first using her hands, and then a silicone lined collection tube that feeds into a glass bottle. There really isn’t anything creepy about this, which might surprise some who aren’t familiar with this growing sub-genre of romance. A lot of monster/alien/non-human romances play around with those intrinsically taboo notions. They delve into the darkness of their own concepts and the implied ideas of power dynamics. We’re not short of alpha monster stories where dainty damsels are flung over a furry/scaly shoulder and taken roughly. It’s an appealing fantasy for many. But there’s also the parallel version where the monsters are the antithesis of that image. They’re just big sweetie pies. That’s where Morning Glory Milking Farm falls. Its minotaur hero Rourke is a total darling. He’s kind, considerate, and totally devoid of a controlling streak. He doesn’t even mind that his new girlfriend wanks off other minotaurs for a living! Bull semen, specifically Minotaur semen, was a major component in giving the pills the oomph their devotees needed . . . and she, in her new role, if she decided to take the job, would be responsible for collecting it.

A note to DA Readers: there’s more to this book than weird minotaur sex. I promise. Although, to be fair, there is a fair bit of weird minotaur sex as well.) Rourke is aware of boundaries and potential conflicts for Violet within her job and he seeks to build a relationship with her outside of sex before things become physical between them – this includes pausing his visits to the farm for a while so as not to confuse things. The way the story treated these kinds of issues made it much more than an erotic romance. I liked the inclusivity of Cambric Creek and the way Violet examines her previously held prejudices and privilege as she learns about the community. I liked the friendships she built outside of her romance with Rourke and a I liked the way that Rourke never sought to control Violet or make any demands about her ceasing work at the farm if she didn’t want to. I wrote in a review recently that I found a marriage of convenience plot a little unbelievable but that I’d definitely gone with stranger things before so I gave it a pass. This is exactly the kind of book I was referencing in that review.
