About this deal

Since then they have performed both on radio and television, on channels including Italia 1, Canale 5, Italia 7, Radio Deejay, R101. Sicilians love them and those of you who have travelled to Sicily would have seen them growing all over the countryside, eaten them after the meal in restaurants (as the cleansing fruit) and seen them for sale from the back of trucks on roadsides and in markets. I’ve only consumed prickly pears as a snack or dessert after a meal, but other applications include jam, juice (making sure to add some acidity like lemon juice), and vinaigrette. One interesting tradition is winery owners giving the fruit to their grape-pickers for breakfast to prevent them from eating grapes during the harvesting. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

The nearest town is Greve – here’s a selection of seasonal produce, including chestnuts, fungi and prickly pear (bottom left). It’s commonly found in Southern Italy, in particular in Sicily, Calabria, Puglia, Basilicata, Campania, Sardinia. Most cacti produce a good product, I have three different types from Sicily and one from Mexico… In Sicily I found a red ice cream made with fichi d’india, delicious! The process of moving the famous potted citrus trees into the orangery for winter was just about to begin. My parents are from Sicily and they miss good, sweet ficchi d’India (and so do I)…please contact me at [redacted] if you have any you’d like to share/sell. Harvesting and peeling a fichi d’india is moderately difficult given the sharp needles on the tough exterior skin of the fruit. I’m not really sure where I should begin, Let’s start with ‘Prickly pears’ this is what they are known as in the UK because they are covered in tiny ready to stab you ultra thin needles. The word lagane , like lasagna , comes from ancient Greece where it was used to describe a pasta made of flour and water, cooked on a stone, and then cut into strips. Unless someone had peeled them and set them in front of me, I wouldn’t have gone out of my way to try them either. Some make a kind of marmalade from this exotic fruit, which is often crushed, deseeded and strained then left to dry out in the sun to become a chewy type of candy. In the dead of night, the jilted fella took to the other neighbour’s cactus plantation, cutting off the flowers on every plant through the night to decimate the season’s crop. We had just come back from the beach, so I was definitely tempting fate wandering down in my cover-up and flip flops, but I waved the camera at him and assured him I wouldn’t be touching anything as we picked our way through the sticky obstacle course. Of all the exoticism found in the Calabrese landscape the fichi d’india, or prickly pears, stand out as particularly interesting. Yeah I’d say the sweetness is the only thing that remotely links them, but it’s such a different sweet anyway…and I like my figs *and* fichi d’India chilled. As a child I lived in the Constantia Valley in Cape Town, with the mountain at our back and vines and views down to the sea at our feet, when we stepped out of the front door. And if all other shrubs burn, which happens quite frequently, the fichi d’India will just hang its leaves, so that they resemble a waving mitten.
