At your worst, what emotions were you grappling with when you were going through the divorce process, how did it feel getting divorced young? Telling other people was easy and relieving. Actually chatting and discussing this with others gave me strength to go through with it, I was never afraid of what others might think of it.

The new law removes the need to ‘blame’ one party and will encourage a more constructive approach to separation, promoting reconciliation and reflection where possible but ultimately trusting the judgment of the couple involved.

How did you find telling other people about your decision, did you ever feel a pressure to stay through fear of other people’s opinions? Citizens Advice is also a great place to start if you’re thinking of splitting and wondering how to start the whole process. They’ll be able to tell you your rights, and put you in touch with low cost lawyers in your area.

divorce: what it really feels like to end a marriage Life after divorce: what it really feels like to end a marriage

Helen’s divorced due to infidelity, and she explains how she had a new lease on life when she started again. She wakes up every morning loving how she looks and feels. “Harnessing life and starting over again was a blessing”, she said. Helen had a sense of lightness, choosing her path every morning. She wishes everyone, regardless of their relationship status, had that energising feeling of self-worth.

Why the Answer Might Be “No”

My ex and I are still in love, but he is unhappily remarried now with a new family and he doesn’t want to leave his kids. We see each other occasionally for lunch, but these meetings don’t go further than us declaring our love for each other. By the time I realised I’d made a terrible mistake (about six months later) my ex-husband had already met the woman who would become his second wife. The stress and expense of potentially contested divorce proceedings will be avoided by removing the requirement for consent, admission of adultery or a level of unreasonableness. Don’t rush things. Take it easy and see where life takes you. Stay true to yourself, nobody has the right to change you. If they don’t accept you the way you are, they’re not worth being with you. Relate is also here for worries that might seem trivial or minor. Even if things are going perfectly for you, we can help keep things that way.

My story is I met my ex-husband when I was 18, he was my sister’s boyfriend’s dad, and I liked the attention I was getting, plus I like older men and he was double my age. He was good to me and I soon moved in with him, next thing I know we are getting married the year I turned 20. Everything was great until we lost our jobs, I managed to find one but he couldn’t and got depressed. He got offered a job in his home county, so at the age of 23 I moved for him to be able to work, I left all my friends and family behind for a fresh start. I worked in a few jobs and did crazy hours and we lived in a house share until we found a house to rent, then I got a full-time job, which I loved. My ex is in a longstanding relationship with a woman who is much more like him now. Everyone in my family says she’s wonderful and they’re happy, which confirms that I made the right choice. ‘Don’t underestimate how difficult divorce will be’ I became unexpectedly separated ten months ago and I was looking for a book that was positive in tone and that would fill me with hope and appreciation for the things I've gained. This book tried really hard to be it but it didn't quite get there for me. So if single parenthood is really so good, why the radio silence? Shouldn’t we all be shouting it from the rooftops? T he poet, Holly McNish who loves her life as a single mother, think it’s because mum’s feel guilty gushing about how good they find their child free time to be. In Get Divorced Be Happy she says, How did you find telling other people about your decision, did you ever feel pressure to stay through fear of other people’s opinions? I did worry about financial struggles. I was only working part-time as I studied with the Open University, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to support myself if I went solo. That’s why I’m so grateful for my friend who allowed me to stay with her. I was able to afford to pay her some rent money whilst studying. It also meant that for a long time I was trying to save money in case I needed it for my car, divorce proceedings and other costly things, so I lived on beans on toast and didn’t treat myself for a while.

Yes, before I found out about him cheating, I did everything in my power to avoid divorce (which I why I stayed for so many months.) I couldn’t let a marriage end after 1 year! What would my friends and family think, they’d be so confused and disappointed!

I now look at my marriage and know, very confidently, that yes, we were definitely not good for each other. Of course, as soon as I left, all the red flags came flooding forward (from the past 6 years of our romantic relationship.) I’ve also come to the wonderful conclusion that I am, and never will be, the victim. I had done everything right and stayed true to my heart. I was committed, faithful, and hardworking. It is CLEAR as day that my husband was/is the victim of his own crimes, and will forever live in the filth and consequences of his actions. I won’t! It had nothing to do with me, and my life has become my own again. Never again will I sacrifice my emotions or boundaries, and I will respect my heart from now on. I have the freedom to do and say whatever I want, and no one will ever take that away from me again. I am victorious, and he is vile.
