About this deal

Deep down I know I never wanted to end up a hopeless junkie, with an addiction that I became a slave too. Despite the exhaustive accounts of drug taking, at no point is the reader told why the narrator finds the effects of heroin or crack cocaine so hard to live without.

Doherty has since joked that the publishers have “taken all the good bits out” – after the lawyers of ex-girlfriend Kate Moss and former Libertines co-frontman Carl Barât had a good look at it.His deeply heartfelt recollections of his family, the places he grew up, and his budding fascination with literature from a very early age, had me immediately set right.

I can still see the pictures of sweaty Pete and Carl in those bedroom concerts posted to livejournal by Finnish math students. This talented artist (or Simon Spence) had forgotten something namely to say a few words about the dangers of drug use especially hard drugs that Pete used to get. But then it's such a Peter thing to do, telling everyone the book was written by someone else, based on his words, but not what he was expecting and cut up by his misses and others who wanted certain stories to stay quiet, just before it was released. The reason Doherty’s ruinous lifestyle “worked” within the confines of three-minute songs is because music can make even the most dreadful things seem exotic and exciting. For fans, it’s certainly worth a read, particularly for anecdotes about the making of his albums, his memories of concerts (many of which can be found online) and how particular songs were written. It turned into a long weekend, and on the morning of the second day, he was just sat there on the stairs with his head in his hands.

Perhaps this shows the effect such an enormous amount of hard drugs can have on a person – inviting all manner of chaos into their orbit, but diminishing their ability to find meaning outside their addiction, in their passions, their loved ones, or their selves. We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child. Peter Doherty: A Likely Lad certainly markets itself as such a product: a “rock memoir like no other” from an artist “immersed… in books and poetry”.He does obviously talk extensively about his addiction and he dips into some of the mayhem his life has been, but the sugar coating he puts on much of his 20+ years of extreme drug use, makes taking his words at face value (forgive me here) a tough pill to swallow. Carl describes the Libertines as ‘like catching flashes of sunlight between buildings as you race by on a train. At one point Doherty admits he “wanted to be the most fucked up person in the world”; at another he says he thought he was “going to die any minute”. But I know that when you choose your poison, you have to understand what you're getting yourself in for.
