About this deal

My finished object I think is really delightful, I love the collar and I am again pleasantly surprised as I usually I don’t like things that hide what neck I’ve got.

For this Solina I combined three sizes (sizing is specific to the book, I think I ranged between UK 12-16), starting with the 4 at the neck and shoulders, increasing to a 6 at the bust and tapering down to a 5 at the waist.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Adopting a viable option may be much better for you and your situation than sticking with a routine for tradition’s sake. Taking you beyond the patterns featured in this book, Breaking the Pattern will inspire you not only to build your sewing repertoire but also to grow in confidence with your own sewing. For those of you not who’ve not got made any of Named patterns before, we’ve collated a collection of their most made patterns, and love patterns below.

I’ve always thought that this is something that makes this book less accessible for inexperienced sewists. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The only option I had (seeing as I wasn't going to adjust the shoulders) was to cut the dress at the waistline, then sew it together again where my waistline actually sits.

Although I probably could have put together a package of similar patterns from the Burda Style magazines that I already own, the curated look of the e-book really sold me, and the modelled photos of the Camille jumpsuit look so sophisticated! Breaking the Pattern is the first authentic dressmaking book that showcases the beauty of Scandinavian style.

I felt kind of like I was looking at those little doodles in my elementary school textbooks where they told you “Go to page 89! It has taken me so long to complete that I wondered if I would be able to talk purposefully enough about it in case anyone else fancied it for themselves. My Ruska Knot Dress is a size 6, which is actually one size larger than the size I have sewn for the woven patterns I have made from Breaking the Pattern. It was a bit of a slippery beast to work with and didn't like being overhandled - the points where I've turned through my corners are looking a bit chewed up and my band collar isn't the neatest on the inside! The vents were a little bit challenging – both getting the gap even and the length matching but they worked out in the end and the rest came together really easily.

I don’t really like having to flip back to instructions for another garment halfway through the process.

Also, I have to make hardly any alterations, their block is for a person measuring 172cm and that’s pretty close to where I am, so no lengthening required! Still, though, the more I use the Breaking the Pattern book, the more I have a few very practical beefs with it. They now launch two eagerly anticipated collections a year, with the aim of bringing a new perspective to making your own clothes and supporting ethical and ecological concerns in reaction to the fast fashion industry. I did make a few alterations so this isn't quite true to pattern, but I am happy with the final result (even if it did end up in my wip box for a while!

The Finnish sewing duo behind the indie pattern label Named, Laura and Saara Huhta help you to build your sewing repertoire and grow in confidence as you further design, alter and modify your makes. I'm on a bit of a shirring drive at the moment, after making my Staple Dress I was just working through a bodice muslin for Gertie's Shirtwaist Dress when I decided to drop everything and make this. As adept as I am at getting patterns out of smaller fabric pieces, even I couldn't get a whole dress out of this amount! The Finnish sewing duo behind the dressmaking fashion label Named, Laura and Saara offer up an enticing selection of tops, dresses, skirts, and trousers for the modern seamstress. Since the instructions seemed kind of vague to me, I felt that a less experienced sewist would struggle constructing the garments from this book.
