During the game, your dice provide the resources you need, but throughout the game, you’ll change your dice, snapping new faces on and improving your chances of claiming victory. The idea of customizable dice or a dice-builder has always intrigued me – for at least ten years now… which is when I first saw the first prototype of Stephen Glenn’s game which eventually became Rattlebones… The physical constraints of the die (given that each one will only have 6 faces) makes this a bit of a different challenge than a deck-builder.

Everything, even the advanced card powers, are reasonably easy to understand, although you do have to explain them all at the start of the game which is a pain. My love of board games goes back to my childhood and passion for building relationships with others. The Islands, then, are found on the game board, whose card-grasping shape could only be fittingly captured by adjectivizing the name of an insect.

You may claim a Great Bear, which gives you glory points every time you oust a hero from their position or you are ousted yourself.

I could keep going, but that just means it will take me longer to get to the meat of this fantastic game.Granted, it’s Dice Forge, not Card Forge, so your odds of a useful ROI aren’t exactly going to be 100%, but you do have a one in six chance of rolling any die face any time you roll (and you roll a lot). Bottom-line: The game is fun a few times, then rapidly spirals down into a predictable bowl of meh, destined to stay on the unplayed game closet shelf for a long, long time. The more I played Dice Forge, the more I realized that this light strategy game keeps players really engaged. Dice Forge is a gorgeous looking game and the way the artwork on the box, main board, Temple board and Heroic Feat cards all tie is a nice touch. If this happens, and your strategy is broken because of luck, or because someone took the last card you were after.

Love how like the dice it’s very tactile and locks together so if the table is bumbed everything stays where it should and doesn’t all roll away. Dice Forge does a great job showing what a genre like this could look like, as it’s a functional and fun gateway game with a lot of opportunities and interesting ways to extend it. If one obtains an ancient shard, they will move one space to the left, whereas a loyalty point will move a player to the right. It’s short enough where even relatively inexperienced gamers can plot their potential end game before the first die has even been cast.

But even this colourful vista comes in second place to what is without doubt Dive Forge’s greatest achievement: its insert. It’s light enough to rally the family, but thoughtful enough that you could go all in on decision-making with a group of gamers. My best guess is that while deckbuilders have a low cost of entry, dice-building games … don’t, really, since the construction components here are so highly specialized. In practice, it turns out that one triple multiplier isn’t enough, as it only gives you a one in six chance. On your turn, you’ll only be able to perform one of these actions, but you can gain the power to perform an additional action by paying two sun shards.

Because everyone rolls their dice on every players turn you always feel like you’re doing something. The rules adequately account for two to four players, making the game equally engaging at any count. Get One Good Die and you can focus on getting the x3 face a few times, so that you can triple the outcome of the die. There are a lot of points in the Heroic Feat cards, so, make sure you’ve got a sense of which cards your opponents have so you know where you stand, points-wise.Regarding that post-game, though: For all the time poured into setup, there is equal time required for tear down.
