Often described as a particularly ‘English’ artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolour the mild vagaries of the British climate. It is from her home, Furlongs, near Firle on the Sussex Downs just outside of Brighton, that Ravilious began to paint his Downland subjects.

An exceptionally gifted sketcher, Underwood was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy where he studied life-drawing under the tutelage of E. Featuring some previously unpublished images, this fascinating book presents, in over 00 illustrations, every aspect of their creativity, including advertising, designs for wallpapers, posters, book jackets, trade cards and ceramics. Ella Ravilious is Curator: Architecture and Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum, having worked there in various roles since 2005.This is followed by two illustrated essays, "The Making of High Street" and "High Street at Seventy" by Powers and Russell, respectively. Several of these were paintings of scenes in the Essex village of Castle Hedingham where he lived between 1934-1941 with his family (and where, incidentally, I was brought up as a child in the 1950s and '60s: many of the scenes are very familiar to me). His work is noted for its beauty, restraint, calmness, lack of drama, its sense of light and design, as well as its avoidance of the surrealism and abstractionism fashionable at the time. Trevelyan was a teacher of etching at the Royal College of Art where his students included David Hockney, Norman Ackroyd and Ron Kitaj. There is evidence, almost always, of the land having been traversed and used: the paths are well trodden, the fences zigzag their way across the terrain and pieces of machinery lie rusting in the fields.

This book presents a full retrospective of all aspects of his work, culminating in the final phase of his war artist work. His death at 39 years when his plane disappeared near Iceland was a great loss to the English watercolour school. With contributions from Barry and Saria Viney, Christopher Whittick and Simon Lawrence and a Foreword by Brian Sewell. Although the book was not a limited edition, the destruction of the lithographic plates during the Blitz meant that only 2000 copies were ever printed. Due to the scarcity of the book and the increased interest in Ravilious' work, the High Street book is generally sold in its entire published form.Privately he continued to paint, mainly with oils, and to study the works of the great masters, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso in particular. In an accessible and engaging text, copiously illustrated with reproductions of work drawn from a range of sources, Alan Powers discusses the part Ravilious' work played in creating an English style, positioned between tradition and modernism, and borrowing from naive and popular art of the past. This book includes sections on weather, plants, animals and birds, and ultimately man in the landscape, showcasing Ravilious’s love of machinery and the human presence within nature. Here's a selection of the original lithographs, printed at The Curwen Press in 1938 (and not to be confused with the modern digital/giclée reproductions in circulation). His original watercolours of the chalk figures on the Downs are now considered amongst his finest work.
