His work is noted for its beauty, restraint, calmness, lack of drama, its sense of light and design, as well as its avoidance of the surrealism and abstractionism fashionable at the time. Although the book was not a limited edition, the destruction of the lithographic plates during the Blitz meant that only 2000 copies were ever printed. This book includes sections on weather, plants, animals and birds, and ultimately man in the landscape, showcasing Ravilious’s love of machinery and the human presence within nature. Here's a selection of the original lithographs, printed at The Curwen Press in 1938 (and not to be confused with the modern digital/giclée reproductions in circulation). His original watercolours of the chalk figures on the Downs are now considered amongst his finest work.
