The Asics Cumulus is an excellent option if you are looking for a traditional running shoe that doesn’t change much from year to year. I would choose the Cumulus over the Nimbus for long runs and for faster runs but I prefer the Nimbus for easy and recovery runs.Very soft full-length and uniformly even cushioning which is very comfortable but combined with extensively segmented rubber outsole and hollowed out foam midsole for exceptional flexibility significantly compromises overall stability, and especially in the heel area, which is even more exaggerated if you are a heel striker; you can feel the lumpy segmented outsole.

When I held it in hand, the upper mesh felt noticeably better than the previous version: softer and more premium. Although the ASICS Gel Cumulus can do many things, it doesn’t stand out among shoes with newer tech and materials. Of the three ASICS stalwarts, the Kayano, Nimbus and Cumulus, the Cumulus is the most budget friendly, the lightest and the most versatile.The thick tongue is not gusseted like on the Nimbus 23 but it still stays in place during runs and I experienced no tongue slide. Overall the upper fits slightly snug, is very secure, stretches to accommodate slightly different foot sizes (there is a wide version if necessary) and is very comfortable against bare skin. Cumulus 23 has smooth easy transitions from its long flex pattern at all paces but starts to feel soft and a bit wobbly upfront at uptempo for me where that consistency of feel of midsole through outsole gets a bit overwhelmed by the strike forces.
