Known for tales of sexual obsession that explore the darker aspects of the psyche, Hart (Damage; Sin) adds to these another title (published earlier this year in the U. Josephine Hart (1942-2011) was the bestselling author of Damage, Sin, Oblivion and The Reconstructionist. Josephine Hart must have recognized the force majeure in her own writing when she abandoned the first page of the novel as yet unwritten. There are those born in rolling countryside who are really only at ease in the intense and busy loneliness of the city. We may go through our lives happy or unhappy, successful or unfulfilled, loved, or unloved, without ever standing cold with the shock or recognition, without ever feeling the agony as the twisted iron in our soul unlocks itself and we slip at last into place.

Readers may find the prose overly mannered, however, and the novel more successful as an emotional tour de force than as a credible study of human nature. This treasure trove of letters, stories, essays, poems, selections from diaries and journals, and excerpts from novels covers WW II from seemingly every conceivable angle. In his latest assault on sexual abusers of children, super-tough Manhattan maverick PI Burke works both sides of the law to save Luke, an eight-year-old suspect in a series of baby murders. He climbs up a flight of stairs to the top floor, opens the unlocked door to the apartment, and is shocked to see his father making love to his fiancée. The unnamed narrator seems to say to us I cannot repent for to do so would be to deny the very thing which brought me into existence.

In this diverting tale of the 21st century, poet and novelist ( Summer People ) Piercy explores a world where information has become a commodity more precious than gold. On the day before his wedding to Anna, her stepfather, whom she is close to, has a heart attack, and Martyn while looking for her, finds the address to her secret flat. Chilling and brilliant, Damage is a New York Times bestselling masterpiece of the romantic suspense genre.

For the first time in an outwardly lucky life, he feels passion and joy, emotions that a longtime ``happy'' marriage and fatherhood have never generated. But done well, with the pastry crisp and the fish moist (a delicate balancing act, much like the picture above), it is delicious. After Damage and Sin comes Oblivion--and that's just what most readers will wish for as they peruse the pages of this pretentious novel. This spare, dreamlike first novel comes festooned with blurbs from the likes of Ruth Rendell and Iris Murdoch, and no wonder, for it's an unforgettable tale of sexual obsession and its calamitous consequences.

When the unnamed narrator, a reputable physician and rising MP, meets mysterious, compelling Anna Barton, ``the shock of recognition passed through my body like a powerful current. Damage is a perfect example of how the near inter-uterine bond between a brother and a sister that ruptured at the tender adolescent age was carried by Anna Barton forevermore. He will always be Freddy Honeychurch in Room with a View for me (yes, I know he has been in dozens of things since Room but I’ve avoided those other things and the character of Martyn is just all wrong for Freddy. She was a Director of Haymarket Publishing and founded Gallery Poets before going on to produce a number of West End plays. The MP runs down the stairs completely naked, finding Martyn dead, sprawled out on the ground floor. A quick read of the jacket blurb and a couple of choice quotes from the book and you know that this is car-crash reading – horrible, uncomfortable but you keep turning the pages nonetheless.

One can visualise it as if it were a long fox-tail she wore elegantly and defiantly through all her adult life. Just then the MP is casually introduced to his grown-up son's enigmatic girlfriend Anna and helplessly falls for her. A second screen adaptation has been released in April 2023 as a four-part limited series for Netflix, under the title Obsession. As well writing novels, she was a `poetry evangelist' and her Josephine Hart Poetry Hour at the British Library inspired two edited poetry books: Catching Life By the Throat and Words that Burn. The book is located on a spectrum that is far earlier and far deeper than the cautionary tale of power and betrayal, it offers a glimpse into the primitive, the instinctual, the predetermined forces which govern our psyche of which we have little knowledge and over which we have not much control. the car smash; the letter we shouldn't have opened; the lump in the breast or groin; the blinding flash. Some find it in a place of their birth; others may leave a seaside town, parched, and find themselves refreshed in the desert. Close to her own death the author linked the pain and danger experienced by the protagonists with her own childhood double loss, details of which she did not reveal.
