About this deal

The synopsis says: "The book will offer an inside account of Starmer’s leadership as he overcame opponents internal and external, dragging the party from the depths of its post-Corbyn funk to within touching distance of Downing Street.

Only this week we learned that his commitment in his leadership campaign to abolish Universal Credit was no commitment at all.

The Green Transition Weekly analysis of the shift to a new economy from the New Statesman's Spotlight on Policy team. Baldwin provides a vivid and compelling account of how this untypical politician then rose to be leader of his party in succession to Jeremy Corbyn, then transformed it with a ruthless rapidity that has enraged opponents from the left just as much as it has bewildered those on the right.

The book tracks Starmer’s emergence from a troubled small town background and rebellious youth, through a storied legal career as a human rights barrister and the country’s chief prosecutor, to becoming an MP relatively late in life. Together, they tell an unexpectedly intimate story filled with feelings of grief and love that has driven him on more than any rigid ideology or loyalty to a particular faction. Morgan McSweeney, the guiding light behind Labour Together, is today one of the most powerful people in the Party, a key figure in selecting future parliamentary candidates. There is some detail here on how he operated as DPP, and made alliances with opposite numbers for example in the US. The ability to comment on our stories is a privilege, not a right, however, and that privilege may be withdrawn if it is abused or misused.Maybe a personal view on offshore tax avoidance, the backing of Brexit and the ever widening gap between the 1% he represents and the rest of us. He notes rather ominously that even on Desert Island Discs, the Labour leader “did not answer this question directly”. Holden describes how Labour Together pursued its objectives with a substantial pot of undeclared funding, which it used to secretly insert itself into the Labour Party's 'antisemitism crisis' at a time when it was publicly maintaining a position of neutrality in the Party's vicious factional-infighting. Trade Unions are pulling their funding as Starmer seeks endorsement from the most socially irresponsible businesses in the country and his bureaucracy has unfairly targeted left-wing Jewish people for expulsion from the party more than any other demographic. There are plenty of photographs, a slight quibble is one is mislabelled-it should be shadow Brexit Secretary in Corbyn's shadow cabinet, as thank the Lord Corbyn didn't get into Number 10.
