As the wind-driven snow came down heavily while a partner and I backcountry skied in Idaho’s Boise Mountains, I cinched the hood of my Montane Ajax Jacket closely over my head, looked around, and thought: “beautiful day. We do not offer to reimburse postage costs if an item doesn't fit / you don't like it / change of mind etc. Articulated shoulders allowed me to lift my arms straight overhead with only minimal bunching of the jacket front.

The rest of the jacket is very simple in design, cuffs grip strong and tight around gloves, hood appears to fit snugly around the head with good movement, 2 very large hand pockets are well placed above a waist strap or harness, 1 chest pocket with enough space to fit a compass or GPS unit, and all pockets have waterproof zippers which are easy to use when wearing gloves. The adjustable hood is also very well designed so that you can wear a hat, helmet or nothing and it remains in place in head strong winds. The dropped rear hem, which gives extra protection in the wind and rain; and the pocket storage is ample for what I need them for (although access can be difficult at times as mentioned above). The Ajax Jacket is ideal for climbers, mountaineers and mountain walkers looking for a no-nonsense, uncompromising waterproof shell jacket. The refund will be issued as soon as possible however, by law 14 days is considered a reasonable period of time for refunds.

Fit-wise, I’d say the Ajax has less bagginess around the torso than other similar four-season rated jackets. The Firefly Orange coloured version I tested certainly makes you stick out from the crowd on flat, drizzly overcast mountain days, but with different colours to choose from, all tastes are can catered for.

Extremely versatile and tough GORE-TEX mountain shell combining lightweight 40 Denier fabric with 70 Denier reinforcements in high abrasion areas and a helmet compatible hood and articulated arms. We do have other Montane equipment and clothing, so I’m hoping from the past experience and knowledge of the brand that I’ll get the same good level of longevity for this jacket. On the subject of articulation, I’ve found it’s possible to fully reach upwards without the hem lifting. We try our best to identify any issues like this and make you aware of them in the product description prior to purchase.A proper layering system can certainly help any waterproof jacket with its performance and breathability. The two zippered hand pockets are each large enough to swallow a climbing skin, and the zippered chest pocket is fairly spacious, holding a hat and map.

Overall, I’m really happy with the performance of this jacket, it has kept me dry and warm and I have been able to use it for a number of different activities. One aspect we did enjoy that may not be to everyone's liking is the colour, we were given the Firefly Orange which certainly marks you out on the hill especially in winter. It was important to me that the jacket was lightweight but durable, had taped seams, good pockets that could hold a map, compass amongst other essentials.Cant remember the technical reasons but when changing the smock I will be looking out for an old style Extrem. From a design perspective, I do wonder if Montane could have made the jacket with underarm vents to help with the breathability when the going gets tough.
