Thus the system is closed and hence does not suffer from air turbulence which could degrade the image. The Schmidt-Cassegrain design provides a good all-round system suitable for both observing and astrophotography and with an enormous range of optional accessories available. This means you can point your scope at any part of the sky but, unlike an equatorial mount, altazimuth mounts are not aligned to Earth’s angle of rotation. The telescope does experience image shift (a common occurrence on an SCT), but it is not serious enough to take away from the visual experience.The views you see at the eyepiece will take your breath away if you’ve never used a scope before, or even if your used to something smaller. Now, without moving the main scope, adjust the viewfinder so that the same object’s top is in the very center of the viewfinder. You simply choose your location from the database, I chose Toronto (close enough), and point the scope at three bright stars. The downside of an alt-az is that they struggle to track objects accurately enough for astrophotography.

I should note that the 8SE’s alt-az mount is rated for 11 lbs, and the 8SE OTA weighs 11 pounds, so piggybacking anything puts you over the mount’s payload.
