About this deal

Confronting yourself in that way raises the question of whether you think there’s a risk in writing about relationships and dating when it necessarily involves interpreting men’s behaviour!

How many times I go to have a bath, or for a walk, and stop halfway through; turning off the hot tap or pulling the laces back out of my shoes.

Our interview is littered with sentences that open with “you know when you… ” which have the gradual effect of creating identification. And it’s through this inner dialogue that you become conscious of yourself as someone you can talk to and have a relationship with.I nearly say something about one of the characters’ outfits, but then I decide it’s too much effort to complete the thought, so just say “as if” instead. I don’t feel embarrassed when I’m writing about myself because I’m a massive oversharer even in person, but it does affect how other people see me which is crap.

But also, I like the complexity Annie gives this story — sometimes love is great and feels amazing, and you want to spend all your time with that person, and friendships can be exhausting and messy. You couldn’t have known then that the end of that relationship would drive you into writing about relationships and dating, from the perspective of a single woman. It's a book about the best and worst of love: the euphoric and the painful, the beautiful and the messy.

That’s why there’s denial at first, then guilt, then anger and bargaining, and then there’s depression when you finally start to work through what happened. I told Joe about my day in this much detail because he was another part of me, and if that other part of me didn’t know what I was doing it felt like only a fraction of an experience. By the time we reach our mid-20s, most of us will have gone through at least one hideous, gut-wrenching break-up. Dark, fierce and raw, Notes on Heartbreak is a love story told in reverse, starting with a devastating and unexpected break-up.
