About this deal

Since its early days, the house of Givenchy has often managed to find a place for its designs not only in the history of fashion but in history overall. The kimono is the ultimate symbol of Japan, revered within the country as the embodiment of national culture and regarded internationally as an exotic fascination.

Written by Lou Stoppard and contributor Suzy Menkes in collaboration with Chloé, the book features catwalk photography from the Maison's creation in 1950’s to the present.

Covering each of the decades images are accompanied with essays by award- winning fashion critic Alexander Fury, based on extensive interviews with Moore, exploring Moore's career along with key catwalk moments.

The heart of Givenchy beats with the pulse of the times, while maintaining a rare balance between commercial propositions and spectacular presentations. In 1961, Blake Edwards’s film Breakfast at Tiffany’s showcased the couturier’s talent for designing black dresses, whether short or long, which were memorably worn by the film’s protagonist Holly Golightly, played by Audrey Hepburn. Reflecting on his experience of contributing to the book, Madsen is keen to stress the value of fashion critique as documents of a changing world. Moore’s Catwalking is of monumental size and weight, a perfect match for the near half-century archive of a man who has been labeled the first ever catwalk photographer. It was after launching its first fashion collections in 1998, however, that the house reached unprecedented global fame, and pioneered high-profile collaborations with artists such as Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse.More recently, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci took the brand into a resolutely contemporary direction following his appointment in 2005 (dressing icons such as Beyoncé), followed by Clare Waight Keller and American designer Matthew M. Each new ‘era’ in Dior’s history is inaugurated by a brief overview and biography of the new designer, while individual collections are introduced by a short text unveiling their influences and highlights and illustrated with carefully curated catwalk images. Jeffrey Felner is a dedicated participant and nimble historian in the businesses of fashion and style. Founded by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1961, shortly after the young couturier left his post at the helm of Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent would soon become one of the most successful and influential haute couture houses in Paris. Despite Moore’s admission that he is better with a camera than with words, Alexander Fury has been able to take Moore’s images and thoughts and translate his visual fashion savvy into informative and intelligent text.

Meanwhile, for Madsen, the house’s towering legacy as it stands today comes down to great style and the elusive properties of taste. Riccardo’s tenure was formative for me, Clare holds a special place in my heart, and I feel connected to Matthew on a generational level.
