Description

Excess humidity in the home can come from cooking or showering, from the way your house is constructed and even just from breathing. Despite its small size, it can collect up to 500ml of water – ideal for small spaces, such as kitchens, bathrooms or even in damp spots such as under the stairs. Due to the compressor getting going at first, we did find it a little loud, but after a while, it just faded to a low hum, making it perfect for running in the background while you’re watching TV.

The water tank is situated at the front of the unit and there’s a small window, so you can keep an eye on the water level, but when it’s full the LED light will light up to indicate it needs emptying. There is an option to let it run continuously, and it does come with an extra-long hose, but you will need access to a floor drain for this function. If you have pools of water around your windows in the mornings, the Blyss curve moisture trap can help. It’s worth noting, though, that its maximum extraction of 250ml is one hundred times less than the Honeywell 24l and it works best above 15C (so no good for very cold rooms in winter). If you’re going to be away for a weekend, you can set a timer to switch off at any point between one and 24 hours.

Size is another factor, as the devices range from small and compact to large and bulky, but whatever your space requirements, there’s one out there for you. This dehumidifier does an excellent job of tackling excess moisture, it also fights damp and mould while acting as an air purifier. The plug cord wraps around a clip at the bottom of the appliance, making it easy to transport from room to room. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. We tested a range of dehumidifiers by letting them run continuously in different spaces and under different conditions, such as with laundry drying or while cooking.

If kept in the same room as drying clothes, it can also cut the time it takes to dry by a quarter, while costing one fifteenth as much as a tumble dryer to run. Time will tell whether this solves this, but was amazed how much water this little machine draws from our home. Dehumidifiers work by removing any excess water from the air and lowering humidity levels, which can get rid of damp, mould, pollutants and allergens.

It has a tray capacity of 900ml, and the clear design means you can see when the water needs to be emptied. There are a few things to keep in mind while you’re trying to decide, such as the size of your home, whether you need dedicated settings such as laundry mode, and even whether you want one with a built-in air filter, which can help to remove irritants from the air, leaving you breathing easier. This Midea Portable is on the smaller side, perfect for tucking into corners if a dehumidifier doesn’t fit in with your interior aesthetic (but keep it six inches from the wall for maximum efficiency). It can take 10l of moisture out of the air each day, but one thing that is a little disappointing is that there’s only a 2. As a general rule, a compact dehumidifier will suit a small space, while a larger area requires a more generously sized dehumidifier with a big enough tank to efficiently extract sufficient moisture.

Dehumidifiers can help to prevent mould because they work by getting rid of the moisture in the air that could otherwise cause it. The LCD control panel makes the dehumidifier really easy to use – you simply select the right setting for your space, including the humidity levels, and away you go. A compressor dehumidifier is almost like a mini-fridge that cools the air and converts it into water that you can pour away,” says Ryan Kandola, a dehumidifier expert from Aircon Centre, “whereas desiccants take the air and run it over a rotating flywheel which absorbs the moisture, before heating it so the wheel doesn’t get saturated. Dehumidifiers are proving exceptionally popular this year and our top-rated airers may temporarily sell out. Refrigerant models remove moisture from the air by cooling and condensing it and depositing excess water into a tank. This got me thinking that my old unit was maybe suffering from the cold as well and sure enough it worked fine again after moving it to a warmer place. After selecting the dehumidifier to suit your room size, you can place the model where it is needed. Auto Defrost Function: The auto defrost function prevents the collected water from being frozen and doing harm to the machine. We live in a small terraced house that suffered having a cold entry wall which always developes black mold caused by condensation.
