The line of Mostyn first came into prominence as stewards of the royal manor of Mostyn; they later farmed the manor, and ultimately acquired it. With the steady absorption of individual Marcher lordships into great complexes of baronial holdings, their lords were commonly non-resident. Thus, the ancestors of the Morgans of Tredegar and Llantarnam were associated with the Norman invaders of Glamorgan from the early days of the conquest; the Mathew family of Llandaff and Radyr served as stewards to absent English lords during the fourteenth century. In the absence of detailed studies of the rise of Welsh Marcher gentry families, it is not possible to do more than generalize on the basis of such relevant and suggestive details as are available.
