Accessoirement je vous dirais bien de lire ce roman de Cordwainer Smith : " NORSTRILIA " qui traite de l'Australie . It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Because he did not spend long in Australia, occasionally the material in Down Under is so thin that even Bryson can't raise a good joke, and is obliged to wheel out Jurassic specimens ("a place where men were men and sheep were nervous"). Coming from Des Moines, Iowa – because, as he notes, ‘somebody had to’ – bestselling Anglo-American author Bill Bryson has won over a legion of readers with his books which comprise travelogues, memoirs and popular works of history and science. This is, after all, a man who sits through the capital's promotional tourist video, Canberra - It's Got It All!

It is an accomplishment so singular and extraordinary, so uncomfortable with scrutiny, that most histories breeze over it in a paragraph or two, then move on to the second, more explicable invasion--the one that begins with the arrival of Captain James Cook and his doughty little ship HMS Endeavour in Botany Bay in 1770.but not nearly as important as ice cream… --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. If you are not stung or pronged to death in some unexpected manner, you may be fatally chomped by sharks or crocodiles, or carried helplessly out to sea by irresistible currents, or left to stagger to an unhappy death in the baking outback.

Spiky conversations with his English producer friend as they drive to Ayres Rock, the sighting of a rotary clothes-line in the depths of the outback, confrontations with receptionists and waiters, a beer-drinking man at the bar of the Nambucca telling him "Dining room's closed mate.is top of the hardback bestsellers list; it has just been read on Radio 4; the man can clearly do no wrong. I think my favourite episode in the whole book is when Bill and his increasingly tetchy companion drive around Darwin several times trying to find a hotel whose name is unaccountably different from the name it went by when he booked it.

The upshot is that scientists puzzled over the incident for a day or two, then filed it away as an unexplained curiosity--the sort of thing that presumably happens from time to time. The author also supplies plenty of humor in the form of historical accounts of early explorers and settlers of Australia. First, the downside - and the crucial dividing line that distinguishes true travel writing from a superior tourist guide. The thing that Bryson most loves about Australia - its "effortlessly dry, direct way of viewing the world" - is, in fact, his own. Consider just one of those stories that did make it into the Times in 1997, though buried away in the odd-sock drawer of Section C.Ignoring such dangers - and yet curiously obsessed by them - Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. Nonetheless, Bryson has on several occasions embarked on seemingly endless flights bound for a land where Little Debbies are scarce but insects are abundant (up to 220,000 species of them), not to mention crocodiles. Also, his insatiable thirst for detail finds him, as ever, ferreting out the who, the why and the where to enhance the reader's knowledge of the book's subject matter.
