About this deal

For WAN interfaces, the UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+ and a 1 Gbps RJ45 port. For LAN interfaces, the UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+, and a 8-port gigabit RJ45 Ethernet switch. Ubiquiti never officially supported editing the JSON configuration file, but it allowed for flexibility. It was never a good system, and those modifications were never guaranteed to work, or survive firmware updates. It is an old, unsupported way of managing a UniFi network. Unfortunately, there are situations and features where this is the only option. Now, the key differentiator for the UDM Pro is that it can deliver up to 3.5Gbps bandwidth with Ubiquiti's intrusion detection (IDS) or intrusion prevention system (IPS) enabled. With IPS enabled, the UDM Pro will safeguard your home network against active botnets, malware (including ones targeted at mobile devices), and trojans. You can also disable access to P2P or TOR clients entirely, and with five levels of protection to choose from, there is a lot of customizability here. Initially, the aspect that we were worried about with the UDM Pro was fan noise, based on the experience of users with the UniFi USG-PRO-4. A number of users have complained in online forums about excessive fan noise with the USG-PRO-4, and some owners have resorted to changing out the internal fans. Fan noise can disturbing if the device is located nearby. With the UDM Pro, we have found fan noise depends critically on whether a hard disk is installed to store surveillance video. Without a hard drive installed, we are delighted to report that, although the UDM Pro is equipped with two fans, we have never heard fan noise in several weeks of testing. So, if you are sensitive to fan noise, opt for the UDM Pro instead of the USG-PRO-4.

Forwarding ports is not an easy task. Moreover, a single mistake can even mess up your router’s firmware settings. Over the years, Ubiquiti have changed their naming conventions. Currently, the UXG-Lite and UXG-Pro are “ UniFi Gateways” while the UDR, UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, and UDW are “ UniFi Cloud Gateways”. Previously, the UXG-Pro was “Routing Offload”, and the Cloud Gateways were “UniFi OS Consoles” or “Gateway Consoles”. Login to your UI.com account, or create one. An account is required, and you must have internet connectivity This has been one of the biggest debate and wished for things ever since the UDM PRO was first announced. And they have added it to the Special addition - all 8 ports (6 are 802.3af and 2 are 802.3at)

System Requirements

The UDM-SE is mostly the same as the UDM-Pro. It upgrades to a 2.5 Gbps RJ45 WAN port. It also adds PoE support to the 8-port switch, with two 802.3at PoE+, and six 802.3af PoE ports. The UDM-SE also has 128 GB of internal storage for UniFi Protect. One other note on terminology: you may see “UniFi controller” used. This is a generic term for a device that runs the UniFi Network application. That software configures and monitor UniFi networks.

Port forwarding is an essential feature that can help in many different cases. It enables you to access any device or server that is hidden behind private networks, routers, firewalls, NAT, or CGNAT.If you don’t need PoE-enabled Ethernet ports at all, the UDM-Pro will probably be fine. But do note that its WAN Ethernet port is limited to 1 Gigabit Ethernet. Ubiquiti is still going to be offering the modular options for those customers who still need it as in some use cases, having everything under one device isn’t actually practical. But for a small business or home environment the UDM covers a lot of needs and isn’t that expensive when comparing the individual UniFi components and the UDM-Pro isn’t much more on top of that. The main differences between the two are the access point the UDM has, the dual WAN the UDM-Pro has as well as its ability to run UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, UniFi Talk and UniFi LED on top of UniFi Network. NOTE: The UDM-SE already had Wireguard VPN support, and since the UniFi OS 3.0.20 release, the UDM-Pro also supports Wireguard VPN Server. Comparison Table – UDM-SE vs. UDM-Pro While many routers are able to support (WAN to LAN) throughputs of close to 1 Gbps in their default modes, switching on SQM (if available) usually reduces available throughputs dramatically. While throughput reductions may not affect broadband users with relatively modest speeds, up to now, broadband users with ultrafast broadband connections (with speeds in excess of 300 Mbps) have not (until the release of the UDM Pro) been well served. What really matters are these three categories, and the differences between them: Standalone, Independent UniFi Gateways

Connect one end of your Ethernet cable to your modem or router, then connect the other end to the RJ45 Internet port on the front of the UDM-Pro (Port 9 in the Hardware Overview table).Like the USG, the USG-Pro is old, and most of the limitations apply. The USG-Pro has slightly more powerful hardware than the USG, but not by much. If you’re comparing to the EdgeRouter line, the EdgeRouter Pro (discontinued) and the USG-Pro share a CPU, and have similar performance.

These act as their own controller and can’t be joined to a Cloud Key or other UniFi Network controller. Here’s a good example of how to configure an USG to route traffic over an OpenVPN tunnel. If this type of configuration is intimidating to you, take a hard look at what is officially supported. You will be limited to the settings in the web interface unless you are willing to create custom, breakable configurations on old hardware. The UDM Pro includes the UniFi Network Controller so you canmanage your UniFi Switches and APs. It can also run the UniFiProtect software for convenient monitoring and completemanagement of your camera surveillance system. Video recordingsare stored on the built-in NVR (hard drive not included) and canbe easily accessed using the UniFi Protect mobile app. Via remoteaccess, you can securely view the recordings that are privatelystored on the UDM Pro rather than a third-party server. We will not sell, distribute or lease your personal information to third parties unless we have your permission or are required by law to do so. We may use your personal information to send you promotional information about third parties which we think you may find interesting if you tell us that you wish this to happen.

The UDM Pro provides Smart Queue Management for the fastest (>300 Mbps) broadband connections

While the USG and USG-Pro are older, they have some features which have not shown up in the newer products. Namely, any feature which requires manually editing the JSON config file on the USG is not possible with the UXGs or Dream Machines. The newer hardware doesn’t have the same underlying architecture, and does not have the same JSON config file workaround. You are limited to what features are exposed in the web interface. For outdoor applications, shielded Category 5 (or above) cabling should be used for all wired Ethernet connections and should be grounded through the AC ground of the power supply. The UDM Pro offers advanced firewall policies and persistent threat management to act as an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and Intrusion Detection System (IDS). The steps to setup the device through the app are similar, just make sure you have Bluetooth enabled and you are connected to the UDM-Pro in your Bluetooth settings.
