The idea is that two squabbling brothers, one fat and one thin, discover an underground world divided into two states, that of the plump Fattypuffs and that of the scrawny Thinifers. To my great fortune, I recently happened across a passing reference by someone on the internet about the book (in a totally different context) and was able to finally obtain the author's name, an accurate title, and an ISBN for this jewel of an allegorical children's book.

It’s an imaginative and well-told tale, with funny characters like President Rugifer, who insults everyone twice, and King Plumpapuff, who takes a nap every half hour. Each boy is taught the history of the Fattypuff and Thinifer societies and also taught about their mutual intolerance of each other. I realise, incidentally, that the whole notion of the book would probably be greeted with horror by the health and safety (and discrimination) brigade – almost as much as some of the other favourite books of my childhood which I do not even dare to name! The land below is split into two camps the rather rotund Fattypuffs and the seriously skinny Thinifers. The Irish Independent chose Fattypuffs and Thinifers as one of the top 50 books for children, [3] while Anthea Bell chose it as one of "her top 10 favourite books in translation that she would recommend for children. An adorable little satire with two message that are just as relevant now as they were almost a hundred years ago. Discover timeless favourites from The Jungle Book and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to modern classics such as The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

His first novel, Les silences du colonel Bramble, was a witty but socially realistic account of that experience. Whether one is of warlike sentiment or totally in opposition to war, Maurois' wonderful parable about the essential folly of war is not to be missed.

And it took a war as well as a lot of argument before the boys could teach them to agree about anything. I came across it at school, perhaps it sticks in the mind because of how thorough going the fantasy is. The brothers are separated, for you see Edward is a bit on the plump side and Terry is as thin as a rake and through no choice of their own they are drawn into war between the two camps. A children’s fantasy first published in 1930, this book tells of two brothers, the thin Terry and the plump Edward, who descend into an underground world.
