About this deal

If you can grip me that quickly, we're off to a good start, which is exactly what this book did (which is super rare for me!

New York breeds unhappiness and problems, and in that sense, it makes you fit into a mould that truly, only some people are made for. i like flawed and unlikeable characters, but there was something about the way it was written here that did not work for me. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password.Either described as poignant and relatable or shallow and pretentious, this debut novel from Coco Mellors feels like the personification of an Instagram filter—something that simultaneously enhances and yet covers up reality.

mellors’ exploration of relationships also feels strikingly contemporary - in a fragmented world full of such choice and chaos, it’s becoming increasingly harder to figure out what you want, what you desire, to decide what it will take to bring ‘true happiness’, a notoriously obscure concept which everyone is still desperately trying to grasp anyway. Mellors also does not have the ability to make her insufferable characters compelling like Moshfegh. Mellors does not have the writing skill nor does she have the ability to capture certain aspects of life that Rooney can so naturally do.I have nothing kind to say because for me to have a discussion about this book Mellors would have had to do something as an author worth discussing.

Let me give you some context of how I came about the novel: to start with, I think I was more accustomed with the cover of this novel, than I was the actual content of it. Cleopatra and Frankenstein is a journey and yes, it isn’t for everyone, but if you can get past the change in form and tone, I think you’ll be able to appreciate the fact that Mellors has managed to build a relationship with the reader and several very complicated characters in her very first novel while paying homage to New York.

these ppl are boring and the author's attempts to make them into rooney-esque figures, well, tis' cringe. A good book is a book that captures my mind so intently that it makes me suffer, it torments my heart and haunts me long after I've turned the final page. so although there were interesting elements in the story, it felt disconnected and inconsistent with everything else that was going on.
