Installing the Bar Mitts was straightforward and quick, and armed with my new cold weather shield, I set out to test them during another winter gravel adventure in sub-freezing temperatures. Use them instead of your winter gloves or on top of them as extra protection for the coldest season of the year. I say rough, because, well, this was rapid prototyping – so there wasn’t a lot of measurement or pinning done initially – just cut and go. But once you’re riding in freezing temperatures with warm hands, you’ll be way less worried about how they look. Won't win fashion awards but in the winter when you look like a stuffed toy in a condom I tend to value function over style.

However, these days I'd rather wear a full gimp suit in the supermarket than be seen with them on my bike. Cold weather, waterproof and windproof handlebar mittens to keep hands warm and comfortable in the cold, rain, snow and wind. This rough weather accessory has been custom-designed to fit our handlebars and can be easily locked in with included bar plugs. In the thrall of global climate change, winters here in the Pacific Northwest have become increasingly more severe. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The roads were icy but rideable on gravel tires, and I knew we’d soon be warming up as the roads turned up.

While we understand that this is a long time to wait, we wanted to make sure that these bikes were available to purchase for any rider who had their heart set on a preferred model and wanted to secure theirs well in advance. Sure—your friends, family, and maybe even your dog will make fun of you for wearing them, because they really can look ridiculous. Inside the Bar Mitts, I had started out with mid-level gloves — ones I usually wear in 40- to 55-degree weather. With a wide opening to accommodate your coat sleeves, you’ll be able to place your hands in and out at a moment’s notice.I created an instruction sheet, here: made PDF layout/instructions here, which can be used for reference. I am considering purchasing a pair of those handlebar mitts that I see some bikers have for the winter.

Bar Mitts offers sizes Small through XL, so it all comes down to one’s preference, the temperature you’ll be riding in, mechanical vs electronic shifting, and the size of your hands and bulkiness of your gloves.Made of 5mm thick neoprene, the cornucopia-shaped pogies slide over the bar ends, enclosing the brake levers and hoods, and attach to your bars using an integrated velcro strap. Constructed of 5mm neoprene, the Bar Mitts are waterproof and windproof for the ideal hand protection solution in cold, nasty weather - be it snow, rain, and/or wind. But I take back any side-eyeing I’ve ever done because they are indeed incredibly effective and I have now become a "pogie" user.

Use our Handlebar Mitts to protect your hands from the elements while freeing up your fingers to operate the brakes, shifter, throttle, and control system. Attaches to drop handlebars to block out wind and keep the hands warm even when riding at speed in low temperatures. The Bar Mitts, however, are more like neoprene pockets that fold over and enclose your brake levers and hoods, close around the bar using velcro yet keep an opening for easy hand insertion and removal. And you might even make fun of your ski-glove-wearing friends for standing around with their hands in their armpits. Bar Mitts Road Pogie Handlebar Mittens: Internally Routed A neoprene pogie designed to work with drop handlebar in which the brake/shifter cables are routed underneath the bar tape.

The terrain turned to rolling and we soon were plowing through some four feet of powder, descending as though we were on skis. While the bike is 85 percent assembled before it leaves the factory, additional assembly is required prior to your first ride. Developed over a five-year period with input from Mike Curiak's years of self-supported trips on the Iditarod Trail and veteran racers of the Alaska Ultra Sport and Arrowhead 130 events.
