He’s actually less disdainful towards Watson and the police in The House of Silk, where authenticity ends up lost to make him a kinder, gentler Holmes, and nobody asked for that. He begs Holmes for help, telling the unnerving story of a scar-faced man with piercing eyes who has stalked him in recent weeks. As they are leaving, Holmes notices an unusual building opposite and Reverend Fitzsimmons tells him it is used for performances.During his tour through the prison, Watson realises that one key would not be sufficient for a successful escape attempt. Some of the plot developments were heavy handed, and there were a couple of moments that stetched credibility - perhaps in this case the author was simply remaining true to the original - but don't let those glitches put you off, as it is on the whole extremely satisfying, quite haunting and unusually emotional. It’s been a complete pleasure working with you and your team on a cracking couple of sold out shows – look forward to being back with you soon. I think AH has managed to do an excellent job of telling this story in a fashion that manages to conjure up the style of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Man of mystery … Anthony Horowitz's The House of Silk is the first official follow-up to Conan Doyle's last Sherlock Holmes case.

Reverend Fitzsimmons tells them that Ross had run away the previous summer, and had only been their pupil for a few months. He also reveals that Ross was an orphan, and that he had been enrolled at a charitable school for boys before running away. Auguste Dupin is contrary to a similar scene in A Study in Scarlet, where he considers Watson's comparison of him to the fictional detective an insult.
