About this deal

It's not often that I feel indifferent to a book for as long as I did with this one but then end up absolutely loving it, but that's exactly what happened. One day, I couldn’t find them in in the supermarket, so asked a nearby member of staff where the King Flakes were. They manage to find the remains of a ship with several Gentian members still alive, and rescue them and the four enemy prisoners they had captured. Your brain is continually scanned while you are in it, so the world constantly adjusts and changes according to your wishes. Personally, the character work in Reynolds’ books has never bothered me, but if it bothered you, I think you’ll find this one has a refreshingly different take.

After some coercion, he shows them his entire collection of ships, which were hidden inside and disguised as part of the gas giant's ring system. Why has it taken me this long, seeing as my Twitter profile has gradually (over the last year or so) morphed into an Alastair Reynolds fan account? I’d say this would be a terrific jumping in point if you were interested in checking out Reynolds’ work.

Sometimes it’s for nefarious purposes, sometimes for self-preservation, and sometimes to spare others from pain. Seine wirklich guten Bücher füllen diese Welten aber auch mit Leben, interessanten Charakteren und einer glaubwürdigen Geschichte und Charakterentwicklung. Purslane's ship, Silver Wings of Morning, is so large that its main cargo bay has its own weather system.

The surviving shatterlings have to dodge exotic weapons while they regroup to try to solve the mystery of who is persecuting them, and why – before their ancient line is wiped out of existence, forever. While it does not appear to host an atmosphere it does have much stronger gravity than it should due to the black hole in the center of it. Reynolds occasionally gets some slack for his character development or lack thereof, each character’s voice tending to just be the author’s voice, etc.It feels like Reynolds is trying to pull of something big and can't quite pull the threads together. Aside from five main characters (arguable, Campion and Purslane, the Machine Person Hesperus, Abigail and her playmate), new ones who are introduced aren't distinguished far beyond a particular trait, which is then repeatedly referenced for the reader ('the leader,' 'the mismatched eyes,' 'beautiful,' etc). The novel is divided into eight parts, with the first chapter of each part taking the form of a narrative flashback to Abigail Gentian’s early life (six million years earlier, in the 31st century), before the cloning and the creation of the Gentian Line. Many of those empires were benevolent and welcoming, but others were inimical to all outside influences.
