About this deal

The Protector," the 17th installment in Scott Blade's Jack Widow series, takes a simpler approach with a first-person perspective from Widow himself. While showing is generally preferred – for the deeper connection it allows between reader and the character carrying the point of view -, it’s also something that’s dangerous when an author is overdoing it.

Aided by The Shadow Club—a secretive cabal of the world's sharpest investigators—Widow is lured into a world where justice is a shadow play of vengeance and power. The story kept my attention, and there were parts that were well written and made me want more of Jack Widow. In this enthralling new thriller by International Bestseller Scott Blade, Jack Widow teams up with a woman from his past to investigate a double murder, but things aren't what they seem. The Jack Widow book series often draws comparisons to Jack Reacher due to the titular character, Jack Widow, being a former military man turned drifter, similar to Lee Child's Reacher. Scared, alone, and with no one to trust, she runs to the only place she thinks is safe, her summer post as a fire lookout.

Quickly, Widow grows attached to her and her two sons, but his feelings for her may be more than a simple infatuation. Ultimately, 99p for three very readable books is fabulous value and if you like the style of Lee Child and can look past the similarities to Jack Reacher I would strongly recommend this collection.

The author himself says that book four (which I haven't read) is his favourite so that trend may well continue. In the meantime, readers can explore related characters like Alex Ormond and Philip in Blade's wider literary universe. All in all a good fast moving thriller storyline and read remembering that however well your trained it’s highly unlikely that a single person could achieve what Widow did. With little planning and a lot of shooting, he gets the son and hauls them out of there with minutes to spare. At this moment of time, the ex-undercover NCIS agent and current drifter Jack Widow makes his entry. Unlike Blade's usual style, this book is shorter and focuses on relentless action, making it an engaging and swift read, steering clear of the usual narrative fluff found in the author's works. Widow gets stuck in one difficult situation after the other and thankfully he has the time and background to deal with them.

For a Reacher style novel, you expect a certain amount of telling, because Reacher and his buddies are all about details. Without saying it in so many words the suggestion is here is the son of Reacher though Reacher was not aware of it. The primary characters described by author Blade in this book include Alex Shepard, Jack Widow, and several others. A late-night stroll down the mostly abandoned Route 66 in Arizona is nearly the end of Widow as a pair of headlights approaches but instead of slowing, the vehicle almost flattens him. The first book, in particular, seemed to me to try too hard to be another Jack Reacher story, and to be fair to the author he does acknowledge his debt to both Reacher and Lee Child at the end.

It’s everything he wanted: quiet terrain, plenty of fishing, sleeping out under the stars, and no people. After her own son has into such an evil, Claire does not seem to have any left in her life to trust.

This particular book features the central characters in the form of James Hood, Jack Widow, Claire Hood, and many others. A good fast moving thriller and storyline that has Widow being a Good Samaritan helping a retired Federal Marshal who almost hit him with his car while suffering a heart attack. He camps out in the Alaskan wilderness on Kodiak Island, relying on nothing but his survival skills. To my personal opinion, there is nothing wrong with a little telling mixed in, especially when you’re providing context for the reader. International bestseller Scott Blade fires up the page with thrills, passion, and explosive action in the eighth book in the Jack Widow series.
