He lived with the likes of ''Understand Your Man'', ''Banks Of The Ohio'' and ''Fifth Man In The Fire'' all his life, and his performances are relaxed, warm and soulful. Several other songs, such as track 13, had been performed by Cash on TV or live in concert, but formal studio recordings had not yet been issued until now.

It's hard to think of a more appropriate and impressive send-off for this one-of-a-kind American original than the massive musical statement that is Unearthed. Particularly on the first CD, starting with a powerful performance of ''Long Black Veil'' this feels like a one man journey through the history of American song.

The first three discs feature outtakes and alternate versions of songs recorded for American Recordings, American II: Unchained, American III: Solitary Man and American IV: The Man Comes Around. Few artists can boast a catalogue as diverse, memorable and remarkable as Johnny Cash and this collection of unreleased and inspirational material is as vital as the myriad albums and compilations which preceded it. There's a live version of ''Bird On A Wire'' with gorgeous strings which is better than the original. A solo version of "Like a Soldier", a version of "Drive On" featuring different lyrics, and an acoustic studio version of "Bird on a Wire" were issued on the 1994 album American Recordings. Also, maybe the light scuff may have been occured in the transport, the disc can move in the sleeve since it's not enough tight. Neither are the definitive statements that some of Cash's covers from this period are (his glorious takes on Nick Lowe and Danzig, to name just two), but they're still very much worth hearing. Not for allowing a musical icon to end his career and life by recording some of the best music ever, but because there are so many excellent recordings here that should have been released during Cash's lifetime. Flesh and Blood" is a newer version of the original that was written for I Walk the Line (Soundtrack). A fifth disc, titled My Mother's Hymn Book, is a complete, previously unreleased solo acoustic spiritual album.

Devil's Right Hand" was previously recorded by Cash with the Highwaymen for the 1995 album The Road Goes on Forever. To celebrate the Man in Black’s enduring and influential legacy, American Recordings and UMe have reconfigured this monolithic collection for its first-ever vinyl release, spreading Unearthed’s 79 songs over nine high-quality 180-gram vinyl LPs while expanding the original box's distinctive packaging for the long-playing format. With each track being essential listening, there is refreshingly no filler material to pad out the collection. In addition to the 4 other albums of American Recordings and the many fine collections of his earlier material, Unearthed is a treasure trove for devotees and new acolytes alike. Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart. Best of Cash On American offers a memorable 15-song selection of highlights from Cash's first four albums with Rubin. One book holds the nine vinyl records while the other is a 60-page coffee table book which contains Sylvie Simmons’ sleeve notes, Cash and Rubin’s comments on every track and plenty of photos from the recording sessions.

As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1964 album Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian. The last disc of this monumental set is a "best-of" compilation of tracks that did make it on the American individual discs, a reminder of just how groundbreaking these sessions were. It's true that there is no ground breaking version of a contemporary song, no fresh triumph like ''The Mercy Seat'' or ''Hurt''. Rolling Stone named it as one of the “100 Best Albums of the 2000s” and declared the set "a slice of American culture as monumental, and as enduring, as Mt. A really nice box set, but it's a shame that they really missed the care about the records production.

One book holds the nine LPs, while the other is a gorgeous 60-page coffee table book that incorporates Sylvie Simmons' extensive liner notes, drawn from five days of interviews at Cash's home in Tennessee, as well as Cash and Rubin's comments on every song on the set, plus a copious selection of photographs from the recording sessions, including some of the last photos ever taken of Cash. Not just a must have for completists but for those who see Cash as a great interpreter of other's work alongside his own. Irrespective of the source, all of our collectables meet our strict grading and are 100% guaranteed. If you're a fan you SHOULD get this, and if like I you praise Cash's American Recordings era is mandatory to own it.
