It feels good to read about women with astounding bravery- cue Freddie Mercury’s The Show Must Go On… I don’t want to give too much away, but a young girl who shuns her entire upbringing to scale the city’s restrictive social circles – and succeeds tremendously- I mean, when’s the movie coming out? Her proposal for The Mistress of Paris was awarded the runner-up prize in the 2012 Biographers' Club Tony Lothian Competition for the best proposal by an uncommissioned, first-time biographer. Rooted in my imagination, this opens up to you the sensory interlacings of my little inner worlds : tasks concocted by me for the submissives ( The Calendar), session audios, photos, texts, testimonials and sometimes, videos. A skilfully woven tapestry of a fascinating life, this is a hugely interesting and surprisingly involving read – many thanks to the publishers for the copy. Having been awarded a first-class honours degree in BA French from Royal Holloway, University of London, she went on to attend the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art where she took a Masters in the History of 19th-Century French Art and was awarded a distinction.

She published books that sold well, created works of art for popular shows (one attended by Buffalo Bill), dazzled the south of France, and survived some potentially damning court cases (two involving her mother). The biography traces the incredible tale of the bewitching courtesan, the Comtesse Valtesse de la Bigne, who clawed her way up from humble, impoverished origins to become one of the most sought-after and glamorous women in Paris. In the meantime, the parks are back open, and I can relish in a little no-tourist calmness with another good book, at least for a little while. But, the more I stayed inside, the more I realized that everything that I loved about Paris had been put on hold - the city was frozen.

This proves to be both a full and intriguing biography, and a fascinating portrait of the time period. And an ‘Armagnac Savarin’, which is not to be missed – Armagnac is generously poured over slices of sponge and served with the lightest whipped cream! The Western script inscribed on the print adds an authentic touch, reminding us of its historical significance. When I left home all those years ago it was because I had lost myself on a path that I knew I didn’t want to follow. She mentored the infamous courtesan Lianne de Pougy and her rumoured affairs with Napoleon III and the future Edward VII ensured the newspaper gossip columns were never short of material.Half the city had fled to their second homes in the airy French countryside, and there were obviously no more tourists. I was away all day, either working or at school, and in the evenings I usually went out to see friends: for dinner, drinks, or just to go for a walk. Walking into this restaurant there is no denying that you are in Paris – it’s an old school bistro with a quintessentially French interior; brass rails, red velvet banquettes and wood-panelled walls, and of course, beautifully pressed white linen table cloths. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Will Becca and Daniel find the killer before the murderer strikes again, and will they ever manage to marry?
