Although they're easy to overlook, these tiny pins are necessary for restarting a zipper if it gets misaligned. They've both spent the better part of the last two decades in the backcountry, developing the expertise to evaluate all sorts of outdoor gear. The Thermo Gills’ zippers are only accessible from the outside of the bag, so you have to unzip the main bag zipper and stick an arm out to open or close them. Unfortunately, the Sea to Summit Spark II (left) and Thermarest Hyperion (right) both lack these important pins. Dark interiors turn the bag into a black hole for little things like that while bright liners make them easy to find.

This is a signature feature of NEMO sleeping bags: a cut that has extra width in the shoulders, hips, and knees, which allows you to bend your knees if you’re sleeping on your side, just as you do in bed at home. Many sleeping bags are designed for limited use cases, but the Forte suits many activities and climates. The final standout in this metric is the Western Mountaineering MegaLite, and it has these bases covered.

With all of the Forte's added features like the two additional zippers and the "blanket fold", we're not surprised how heavy this bag is. The hard choice then is deciding between the MegaLite, our favorite bag for the average backpacker, and other top performers.
