It was honestly like a very uncomfortable threesome where two people were way more into each other than they were you. You can market your book without alienating a potential audience who might’ve given your book the benefit of the doubt or fanning the flames of your existing audience’s contempt.

Holo and Lawrence are great characters (for a while the only recurring ones) and they develop well independently and together.

With a few exceptions, each book deals with Holo and Lawrence traveling to a new town and experiencing the economic turmoil there.

However, the central couple have a beguiling sweetness and Babalola skilfully imbues their scenes with a tender innocence that is romantic. It isn't long before an opportunity for profit presents itself to Lawrence, one that could fulfill his dreams of owning his own establishment. For the sake of simplicity, non-spice will be considered books that do not have any explicit sexual content; not that it’s never mentioned, but the most you’ll see described in detail is kissing. Continuing the trend of my last two posts being about romances, this week’s post is another romance! One last thing I wanted to touch on (since it’s pretty relevant to me and my work) is how spice/no spice translates over to the young adult genre. As the book opens, she is fleeing after a one-night stand with a fellow student who fancies himself as the campus Casanova but whose “50-thread count sheet scratched against my calves”. Even if it takes longer and a delay is necessary, PLEASE go to the trouble of working with them again.

The side characters also feel worse as they are not as memorable, nor do many go through major arcs. BookTok = the nickname given to the community of readers on TikTok who post videos about what they’re reading, share reviews, recommendations, favorite tropes, etc. Now, there are just more ways to access it, more authors writing books, and more readers willing to give them a try.The novel brings to life 1970s Guyana—a world at a cultural and political crossroads—and perfectly captures a child’s keen observations, sense of wonder, and the growing complexity of consciousness that marks the passage from innocence to experience. In some cases, the local authority may decide that they cannot do so but will let you know this and explain why.

I remember my sister and I being very squeamish toward sexual content in our early teens, not because we were taught it was wrong, but because it was just so foreign to us. For the most part, the setting is grounded in reality, with a lot of real life economic applications and realistic situations. It’s made way for new trends and new ideas to get their place in the sun, and it has done wonders for the indie author community. In reading community parlance, this is usually demarcated by the chili pepper emoji, with one pepper meaning it’s not very spicy or mildly spicy and anything higher than three chili peppers usually signifying that, uh, yeah, you’re in for a time. But (and I say this with as little condescension as possible) because the focus is on the romance, and because many of these books are self-published, the quality of writing can be… not great.Because that’s what I feel like the spice vs no spice argument has done: forced people to choose a side. On the translation and adaption front, there's not much to moan about either, a few bits here and there that needed to be given weaker explanations and details left out, but overall this was another fine addition, sort of depressed as of (01/12/2022) there's only 1 more volume out and I'll have to wait for the next adaption and then where will I be? After all, they probably worked just as hard if not harder on their book only to have it be outperformed by something half as good and twice as sexy. All it takes is getting an idea in your head, looking at your significant other, and thinking, “Why doesn’t he do that? The development of the relationships between mcs is well managed and the romantic part of the story is done in such a nice way that it difficult to stop reading.
