For a more luxurious sipping experience, Plantation XO 20th Anniversary offers a complex and rich taste at a very reasonable price. As I mentioned previously, XO 20th Anniversary also makes a great rum and coke; maybe not what they had in mind, but trust me, it’s fantastic. Born in southern Burgundy, Alexandre Gabriel spent his youth working on his family's farm in central France. His grandfather, a strict disciplinarian, taught Alexandre how to graft a tree, milk a cow and harvest grapes. "For my grandfather, the only wealth is the one from the land," says Alexandre, fondly. After studying at the Macalester College in Minnesota and earning a degree in Lyon, Gabriel began working at Maison Ferrand, one of the oldest cognac houses in France.
A Central American molasses rum, Plantation Gran Anejo, is distilled and aged in Guatemala in casks formerly used for American whiskey before being re-casked and further aged in France at Maison Ferrand’s Chateau de Bonbonnet in barrels formerly used for cognac for up to a year. For additional flavour, in France, it is then re-casked to finish ageing from several months to a couple of years in casks formerly used for cognac. Yummy! The actual rum taste is obscured but the spirit doesn’t taste particularly old or well aged. Aside from coconut I get notes of sweet young alcohol rather than a sophisticated blend of aged rums. Plantation’s Barbados Wild Cherry Finish rum shows that they can make excellent Barbados rum. I recall hearing the words “there is power in a name”. I don’t remember when and where I heard this. But I’m very sure this rings true in the liquor world. A liquor brand may not be recognized by a consumer. But a liquor’s provenance will automatically communicate its prestige and quality. They say that the GI must be inclusive and faithful to the roots of all Barbados rum making. To me, that sounds like a flashy excuse for being allowed to cut corners. I am no Barbados history expert, but I am sure there were shady practices in the past of Barbados rum-making, just like every growing and unregulated industry in the past. How is rum going to get the respect and prestige it deserves if its standards don’t match up to Scotch and Bourbon? Scotch and Straight Bourbon don’t allow additives aside from water and caramel coloring. Aren’t shady practices in American whisky the reason why the Bottled-in-bond act was made? The addition of sugar syrup and flavorings is prohibited. However, caramel coloring under strict guidelines will be allowed for consistency. Očarí vás ohromujúca ovocná vôňa, ktorá postupne prechádza až do kvetinovej arómy. Po niekoľkých minútach, čo rum necháte chvíľu vydýchnuť ucítite vanilku, kakao a mliečnu čokoládu. Na jazyku sa vám začne rozplývať chuť škorice prekladaná výraznou cukrovou trstinou a maslovým keksíkom, ktorú dopĺňa spomínané kakao a vanilka. Zakončenie je stredne dlhé a iba čiastočne sladké. Rum si udržiava konštantnú kvalitu napriek zvýšenej produkcii a dopytu po ňom. Three out of four distilleries want to protect the Barbados GI and the integrity of Barbados rum. Their wish list includes the following:
A sweet and full-bodied rum, Plantation Gran Anejo opens with spiced toffee and vanilla. Mid-palate reveals nutmeg and cinnamon. A smooth and long finish of toffee, tobacco, woody notes Summary This just shows that they will also sell what sells. As a business, this makes perfect sense. This is really a pretty bland product with a sweet hit to keep the masses happy. I have a few issues with this rum. Firstly it is quite often listed as being 20 years old. Now admittedly Plantation do not say this but it doesn’t stop online stores advertising it as 20 years old. Or people saying it is 20 years old. The 20 is there though on the front label, yes it’s smaller perhaps than years gone by but it’s still there. It’s deceiving and I think it is quite deliberate. I do not think Alexandre Gabriel is a fool so I’m pretty sure he knows how a 20 on the front of a bottle works. The rum I Prefer and gave a 9 to is the shorter, squater bottle without the string/rope mesh around the bottle.
Once the rum has been distilled, it is aged in used bourbon casks in the Caribbean for years. After its initial maturation, the rum is transported to Château de Bonbonnet in Cognac, France, where it is poured from the bourbon casks into small, French oak casks that were previously used to age cognac. "We use a technique called "élevage", says Alexandre, "which I guess can be translated to "nurturing'. In this case, each cask is tasted every 3 months. This way we see how the rum evolves. If it needs more tannins, we transfer it to a cask in which we have exchanged several staves for brand new wood, although we would never replace too much at a time. If it is a bit aggressive and needs rounding, we transfer it to one of our damp cellars. If it is a bit too lush and needs some structure, it goes to a dryer cellar."
Plantation 20th Anniversary Extra Old Barbados Rum earned the Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2011, and a score of 94 points from the Beverage Testing Institute. No co už. Tropical ageing : 8 to 10 years the rums used for XO are chosen for their structure with aromatic characteristics suited for intensive oak aging Maturation must be in new oak or in refill casks from a list of recognised wine and spirit denominations.
These then have post-fermentation and distillation sugar added (a practice the brandy/cognac industry calls dosage). The rum is then aged in oak barrels in France for various lengths of time depending on the style of rum. Conclusion It is held in great regard amongst some rum lovers and treat with complete scorn by other perhaps more serious rum “enthusiasts”. Not generally disagreeing with points raised in this “review” of the Plantation XO 20th Anniversary, but there’s a few comments I’d like to make in response: Just like their Grande Reserve, Plantation Barbados 5 Years is produced from a blend of Barbadian rums, aged for three to four years in the tropical climate of Barbados. Plantation XO 20th Anniversary získal nespočetné množstvo ocenení, medzi najvýznamnejšie však patria: zlatá medaila z International Wine & Spirit Competition 2012, RumXP Gold z Miami Rum Festival a hodnotenie 94/100 na výstave Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2015.Plantation XO Barbados 20th Anniversary. Aside from Stiggins’ Fancy, this is perhaps Plantation’s most well-known bottling. Ovocná sladká vůně s banánem a meruňkou, květinovými tóny a vanilkou.
