This set looks like an entire army of meisters toiled for a good year or two getting the image as close to perfection as possible. All eight seasons of the show have been remastered for proper Dolby Atmos, which of course sounds amazing if you have a good sound system or high quality headphones. As stated prior the above video score and related critique of things down below are based solely upon my viewings against a cumulative average curve of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray presentations of HBO’s Game of Thrones: The Complete Collection. That encompasses all 8 seasons of the hit HBO show that plays across 73 episodes, which equates to roughly 75 hours. Another problem was that Season Seven was just seven episodes, rather than the usual ten, and Season Eight was only six.

It’s interesting looking back at it now, too, to remember afresh just how groundbreaking it was in 2011 in terms of how far it was prepared to go to ensure that seriously unpleasant stuff happens to the most pleasant people. Despite it all though nothing ever gets lost in the translation of the mix here including the dialogue thanks to the discreteness of it all.Only time will tell until the jury is out on that, but I regret to inform you that as beautiful as things look here on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc it doesn’t change the lackluster, unimaginative ending employed in Season 8. One has to believe that will happen, but for now if you want to experience the complete series of Game of Thrones on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, then you’re going have to pay to play here. It’s a restrained grade, but one that makes the colors richer and more nuanced, while deepening the shadows and adding a more natural luminance to the highlights.

So I feel reasonably well qualified to say that the step up in picture quality delivered by this 4K Blu-ray release goes way further than I’d imagined possible. Black levels have been taken down to gorgeously rich, inky levels without shadow detail being crushed, while contrasting bright highlights - candles, reflections on metal and skin tones, beams of sunlight - have been given a beautiful boost in brightness and intensity. Two powerful families are engaged in a deadly cat-and-mouse game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.Each episode was larger and more epic, but the series’ writing team had successfully cracked that ten-episode narrative pacing.
