The main thing that worried me is that I’d gotten the spellings wrong as I had people come back to me saying “ ye ye’s not spelt like that” but I was like, “Too bad. When children are facing a mental health challenge, Dr Beth offers what all struggling parents need: an evidence-based road map to helping your child find themselves again.

Throughout the story, we witness interactions between Amy, Ah Goong and her extended family whilst they work and live near the takeaway that is not only their livelihood but their heritage. Amy, now fearful that her grandfather will slip away before the rift between her father and grandfather is repaired, sets about exploring the family history and piecing together the secrets of her family’s past. Happy Families is a series of children's books written by Allan Ahlberg; as the titles indicate, they were inspired by the traditional card game Happy Families. Again I will say I was possibly expecting more and it is a nice story which will suit a lot of people but sadly wasn’t for me this time.I think previously it would have been a bit embarrassing to say that I run a small takeaway, but over the last few years, especially since the pandemic, I came to realise that it's more important than you think: just because something hasn't been shown in a glamorous light in the media or in fiction, it doesn't mean it's not important.

The next audio collection from Allan Ahlberg stars more of his best loved characters, including Master Salt the Sailor's Son, Ms Cliff the Climber and Mrs Plug the Plumber. Dr Beth Mosley MBE is one of the UK’s most experienced and respected consultant clinical psychologists, and she works with children, young people and their families every day. Just like the secret of why her grandfather, Ah Goong, and her father, TC Li, haven’t spoken to each other in thirty years.I love books that give me a glimpse in to other cultures, different families and how they navigate lives issues. Happy Families is the ultimate balance of psychological expertise and practical parenting advice - an essential guide to support our children’s mental health. A classic Happy Families story written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by Andre Amstutz Mrs Lather is getting quite worked up in her laundry. Amy's life is encapsulated by the mundanity of her days; interactions with villagers, the local school, and also trying to find out why her grandfather and her father, TC Li, haven't spoken in years.

In the book we see Amy's mum feeding Ah Goong congee while he's in hospital, do you feel like this is accurate with how your family expressed love growing up? In this groundbreaking guide aimed at parents of children aged 4-21, she offers a comprehensive toolkit that will help you make sense of what your child is going through and give you the hope and reassurance you need to make a change. With over nine hundred entries, Julie May came out tops becoming a debut author at the age of fifty-one. Ah Goong was just one of those brilliant oldies who march to the beat of their own drum and cause mischief, and I found myself laughing out loud A LOT.Each has a story to tell (with a gentle rippling of Cantonese and Welsh) and a mystery to reveal, as Amy gradually and lovingly unravels the secrets that surround her. I think of Claudio, the elderly widower, Rory and his sister left in charge of getting their own tea, Reg Bubbles, life stories revealed in snapshots over our counter'. The reader never gets more that a superficial knowledge of each of them and I finished the novel feeling no closer to understanding the family dynamic or protagonist Amy.

Going for a story where the focus is family, you'd expect it to end up somewhere with the reader realising the importance of family and acceptance etc, but that mark is missed by a long shot.So the thing is, I didn't know if these things were something only my family did or others did too but I'm glad to put those things out for other people to read about. I didn't really care about any of them, as they had no real depth or redeeming features to make them come alive. And that is a beautiful, moving tale of the family behind the local takeaway and what they bring to the community, but mostly what they mean to each other.
