Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. A pilot run of workshops found that most of the participants had experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse in childhood and a higher-than-average percentage had been in the care system. Many were currently or had recently been homeless or in insecure housing, and most had extensive debts and financial stresses. Almost all had adopted coping strategies which impacted negatively on themselves and those around them, including drug and alcohol dependencies arising out of their trauma. Many faced extensive barriers to social inclusion, such as mental health issues, poor communication skills and illiteracy, all of which had significant impacts on their wellbeing. Overall, Room to Rant successfully creates an inclusive and nurturing space in which young men with complex and multiple needs engage in activities which are creative and therapeutic, and this overcomes the usual obstacles to engaging with therapeutic services. Using rap as a culturally credible vehicle for openness and honesty, the young men make full use of a variety of avenues to share their fears and difficulties, thereby effecting a broad range of improvements to their wellbeing. Why It’s Awesome: Font is definitely for the younger crowd though the 17 th Century Chapel that it now occupies means it’s worth a visit as long as you’re young at heart. This is a two-tier affair that focuses on DJs every night of the week and cheap drinks to ensure the party goes with a swing. Made with a brandy sourced in Anagni, to the east of Rome, the honey-coloured spirit was revived in the 1930s by Gaetano Tuoni and Giorgio Canepa, who blended their surnames and came up with ‘Tuaca’. One such project is Room to Rant, run by a grass-roots youth music organisation called Audioactive in collaboration with YMCA Downslink – the biggest third-sector provider of young people’s mental health provision in Sussex. Room to Rant (R2R) works with those who identify as male, aged 16-25, offering rap workshops facilitated by professional artist practitioners plus a counsellor who attends each week and offers one-to-one sessions and signposts to other services where needed. The alcohol in this drink is made from brandy. This is a type of Italian Grand Marnier with vanilla added to it. There isn’t much difference. If I was in Livorno on a hot day and was served a chilled Tuaca shot by someone at a cafe, I’d probably consider it to be a great drink. Brian’s experience will be familiar to many who sampled Brighton’s nighttime industry. Kathryn has been running pubs and bars across Brighton & Hove since around the time Tuaca began flooding into the city. She says a big part of its appeal is the sweetness and delicious vanilla notes. “I love introducing it to the new students in town. They ask what the hype is behind it as a Brighton-based shooter. Poul and Sammy now run the Roedean Café, which offers awe-inspiring views of the Channel. Eagle-eyed diners might also catch a glimpse of a giant-sized bottle of Tuaca behind the counter. It’s so large it has a small brass tap near the bottom, so hapless barmen don’t need to lift it. “When people first started selling it, I’d give them one of those. They’d never seen anything like it. These haven’t been produced for 10 or 15 years.” It’s an unapologetically British Sports Pub which welcomes families, children, pets and pretty much anyone and anything else that wants to enjoy some old-school hospitality in an unfussy and yet, more than satisfying kind of way. The project evaluation was designed in consultation with eight previous members of Room to Rant and the workshop facilitators. Out of this came a form of mixed methods approach, which Mason (2006) calls a Palette of Methods, along with the stipulation that if I wished to observe the sessions, I would have to participate. This meant me going along every week and writing and performing rap. In weekly workshops, the young men are mentored through their artistic development while being offered numerous opportunities and avenues for sharing their fears, feelings and difficulties. Billed as a space to ‘get things off your chest’, the focus is on rapping, rather than on any pressure to disclose and share for therapeutic purposes.Secondly, Brighton and Hove already has a vibrant cultural scene, annually hosting the UK’s second largest Arts festival (after Edinburgh), along with approximately 60 other festivals each year. Alongside this, the city has a far higher than the national average number of people participating in the arts, including those engaged professionally in arts-based activities (Birchall et al., 2018). If you’ve spent any amount of time in Brighton & Hove, you’ve likely encountered Tuaca – whether it’s spotting the distinctive label on the shelves at an independent bottle store or noticing a flurry of excited bar-side activity in a nightclub, when someone proclaims: “Get the Wuacas in!” Why It’s Awesome: The Better Half is all about the traditional British Pub brought up to date. We’re talking traditional ales, the ability to score a Scotch Egg at the bar and regular pub quizzes and occasional live acts. It’s a warm, friendly place and as the owner says, “it’s a million miles from the ordinary and just a few feet from Hove’s seafront.” Be warned, the smoking hot shadow sauce is every bit as hot as it’s billed to be and unless you’re something of a chilli-based masochist – you might want to opt for one of the other house sauces or go with the weekly guest sauce. The railway car booth is a really nice place to sit too. Why It’s Awesome: Football’s not the only sport in the British Isles and at The North Laine Pub & Brewery they completely understand that. This pub is a rugby lover’s paradise with huge enthusiasm for the hooligan’s game played by gentlemen all around.
