Description

To maximise the incredible resolution available to the α7R IV the tiniest vibrations need to be supressed, so Sony re-engineered the shutter unit assembly with dampened screws to absorb any shutter shock. Both cameras have 5-axis in-body stabilization, but the A7 IV boasts a slight improvement in stabilization of 5. The only major difference is that the a7 C has a slower flash sync speed and a smaller but higher resolution viewfinder. As far as the battery issue goes, at events where weight and power aren't an issue, carry all the batteries you need. Sony’s full-frame mirrorless α7R IV reveals ever more overwhelming photographic vision, with expressive prowess once expected only in medium-format cameras, and remarkably high speed in a compact body.

We tested its burst shooting skills with a UHS-II card and the buffer is more generous than most people will need. But while our A7 IV steadied up perfectly for relatively static shots, it did seem pretty poor at run-and-gun style camera movements (or even walk-and-gun). It looks as if Sony may at last be moving over to vari-angle displays, which are so much more useful for video. If you don't shoot much video, or tend to specialize in one particular style, then you'll get more bang for your buck with a more specialist camera and an extra lens or two with the money saved.

This works particularly well for more challenging scenarios like walk-and-talk vlogging, and can also help suppress one of the Sony A7 IV's other weaknesses: rolling shutter.million dots, yet this brand new release is worse than any of that and worse than any other full-frame Alpha camera from this generation. Add in all the custom buttons and you’ve got a camera that can be set up just about any way you want. You can select “High” quality mode for high-precision yet natural realism while suppressing moiré and jaggies for better concentration. Generic subject tracking also seems more 'sticky' and dependable than on previous generations (the AF system now uses more information about color, shape and distance to identify the subject you'd selected). The a7 IV records its gyro sensor readings alongside the footage, letting you apply post-shot correction using Sony's Catalyst software, letting you apply more stabilization in exchange for a more substantial crop, but we've found this to be quite a time-consuming process, that we'd probably only use in extremis.

In our tests, it managed to shoot 4K/60p for two hours and 20 minutes with no overheating, and a few minutes longer in 4K/24p mode before the battery died.

It uses its ability to shoot 10-bit HEIF files to capture HDR images using the Hybrid Log Gamma standard.

Capable of 15-stops of dynamic range and improved color reproduction, my first impression of the files coming out of the camera were very positive. The A7 IV’s new 33MP sensor is hardly headline news by today’s mirrorless camera standards, but it’s a big step up from the 24. With the addition of 4K capture at up to 60p and 10-bit video lending greater flexibility to Log footage (and allowing full HLG capture for HDR TVs), the a7 IV is a much more powerful video camera than its predecessors. Because the camera lacks a stacked sensor, its read-out speeds aren't as fast as the Sony A1's – which means quick panning motions can lead to warped verticals in video or stills, if you're using the electronic shutter (like in our sample video below).
