Description
I may be missing something important in the processing workflow here, so please set me straight if my assumptions are off here. Image quality of both is pure Fuji - beyond reproach. It's pretty clear by now why Hasselblad switched from Zeiss to Fuji for their H-series lenses. In the XF line-up the 14/2.8, 56/1.2 and now these two lenses underline that. I hardly need to mention this in a Fujifilm lens review, much less for a red badge zoom, but yes — this lens is an absolute tank. While the hood is made of plastic, the lens itself is full metal.
While you could just argue that this is more elegant than a lens that has external zoom, it just makes me stress out a bit less about the lens getting bumped and messing up the zoom mechanism. Super fast focus B&H – B&H is a world renowned supplier of all the gear photographers, videographers, and cinematographers need and want to create their very best work. Weed Vineyard, 15 January 2015. Fuji X-E2 at ISO 200, 140mm at f/22 at 1/15 second hand-held, Athentech Perfectly Clear. Full-resolution from camera-original JPG.
Cons:
Below is a 100% crop of the last image in the series. Shot at 140mm f/2.8 at ISO200 and 1/180s 100% crop. Shot at f/2.8 the detail is remarkable I took the Sanyo Shinkansen from Osaka to Hiroshima one morning. It travels at up to 350kmh (217mph). Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. Fujifilm have paid attention to this aspect of lens use, employing a 7-segment diaphragm with rounded blades for pleasing bokeh. In our view, their efforts have been largely successful - see the examples below. The only gotcha with this Fuji lens, like all of them, is that while autofocus is very good, manual focus is nowhere near as good as a DSLR lens. There is no mechanical manual focus; it's electronic, and manual override requires some menu fiddling and camera firmware updating to activate (turn on AF+MF deep in the camera menus). Manual focus is always very precise, but slow. Image stabilization works great; all my shots at 1/15 at 140mm are sharp and it should work much slower, too.
Football on Roof, 15 January 2015. Fuji X-E2, Fuji 50-140mm at 140mm, wide-open at f/2.8 at 1/3,000 at Auto ISO 200. Camera-original file. I seriously doubt that. ED is an integral function that you can directly employ within LR and without having to invoke a separate routine to preprocess the image before taking it into LR. Perhaps I’m missing something here, but perhaps you can explain how jumping into iXT, then processing the image within LR, is faster and more efficient than an in-line function wholly contained within LR. What’s more, if you happen to favor processing in LR (as I do), it avoids either an added step (iXT) or, worse, having to change to different processing software, such as C1.If you are a Fuji shooter, the performance relative to lenses on other systems is irrelevant. This is a unique lens on the Fuji platform, and, as such, is arguably one of the most important. It serves a very important function for those that need a fast telephoto zoom as the only real option. But the critique is this: on most other major platforms photographers have several options at this zoom range; Fuji shooters deserve no less. The weight takes a bit of getting used to, but honestly — I’m a pretty small girl and I still yielded the lens without issue. You just need to make sure you hold the lens properly (literally just support the lens with your hand and form a triangle against your body) and you will be fine. Thanks largely to the automatic distortion correction baked into Fujifilm camera bodies (which cannot be disabled), any optical distortion is almost entirely corrected. Verdict But is it a great lens? I came away feeling much like I did after reviewing the 18-55mm F2.8-4 OIS. This is another lens with a great reputation that left me a little underwhelmed in the end. A good lens, sure. A great lens? Not to me. The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR lens has an internal focusing (IF) system with a very quiet linear motor. In practice, we found the auto-focus to be fast, almost silent and with very little hunting even in low-light. Thanks to the IF mechanism the front of the lens does not rotate on focus, which is very good news for anyone looking to use the lens in conjunction with a polariser or graduated neutral density filter. Chromatic Aberrations
The tripod foot, but not the collar, unscrews. To remove the foot, turn the two screw heads on the foot. I’m first and foremost a street photographer. I use primes. I use wide’ish to standard’ish primes. Not long telezooms. I appreciate a small kit, not a big one. But with that being said, I know there are MANY photographic disciplins that simply require a lens such as the 50-140mm. The 50-140mm range is super flexible, and the fact that you can extend it with a teleconverter just adds to that. The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR has a built-in OIS (Optical Image Stabiliser) equivalent to 5 stops, which can be handily turned on and off via the dedicated OIS switch on the lens barrel. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, are not a problem with the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR lens, so much so that we couldn't find any examples in our test shots. Macro There are plenty of photos that are blurry, but I did manage to capture one that was sharp and could have the exposure bumped up a little in Lightroom. Robustness and build quality
Mylio Photos – Access your photos from anywhere, without the cloud! Easily showcase your photos on-the-go, resolve duplicates, find faces and look for those stunning locations. Crop from above image at 100%. If this is about 6" (15cm) on your screen, printing the complete image at this same high magnification would result in a 50 x 30" (125 x 85 cm) print! You'll be able to avoid camera shake and shot handheld with the impressive image stabilisation that this lenses possesses. A high quality gyro sensor and unique algorithm will deliver some of the best image stabilisation on the market. This is all the more impressive in that you can happily shoot handheld at f2.8 aperture - Perfect for low light conditions. What's in the box? I guess it depends on your PC. Perhaps IXT is easier on CPU power? In any case, enhanced details for me, whilst annoying to have duplicate files, takes about 5-10 seconds, if that for 1 image. In fact, I think it is about 5 yes. I did a batch of 60 in not too much time, but did leave the Pc for a coffee in that case. The Fuji XF 50-140mm lens on the left is about the same weight and bulk as the pair of primes on the right. I suggest the choice should be the lens on the left or the 56mm f/1.2 and the 90mm f/2 on the right. The perfect XF lens line up for hand held portraits and weddings 16mm f/1.4 23mm f/1.4 35mm f/1.4 50-140mm IS f/2.8 Honestly, I relied on the teleconverter a lot because I was shooting photos of animals and it’s often not possible to “zoom with your feet” in those kinds of situations (not just because you’re in a car, but because it’s not safe). There are lots of letters after the full name of this lens - but one of the most important for most users will be OIS. This lens boasts a five-stop in-built optical image stabilizer - allowing you to use significantly lower shutter speeds than the old lore tells you to use, with whatever Fujifilm body you use. Equally important to others are the letters WR - the weather sealing that ensures you don't have to panic when it starts to rain. It does cut out more light than Fuji’s 1.4x teleconverter, but I didn’t suffer much at f5.6 because there was plenty of light to work with. You can also still get lovely bokeh at f5.6 with this lens. You can still get nice bokeh with the Fuji 50-140 with the 2x teleconverter attached.
