Description

A new circular symbol to be used on traffic signs, such as direction signs and advance warning signs, indicating a low emission zone. LEZ entry sign not obscured by foliage or other obstructions, and is of the appropriate size and in good condtion. A green-coloured yards sign with white bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing the closure of a dual carriageway or upon closing distance with a junction. The introduction of the low emission zones will necessitate signing on the local road network, and also on the trunk road approaches. This is considered a necessary cost to ensure that the zones are apparent to drivers and give fair warning of the regulated access. At the end of a section of motorway, the sign is the same as at the beginning, except that there will be a red line through it. This indicates that you're joining a different type of road. You might also come across a sign reading 'End of motorway regulation' as you come off the road into a service station. That means the facilities are situated beside a motorway, but motorway rules cease to apply there. Motorway direction signs

The signs you describe are not prescribed signs as set out in Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 (TSRGD) and would therefore need to be specially authorised. My first question is why? Most uses of countdowns like this are on higher speed roads and warn of a rapidly approaching deceleration lane or other hazard. That is certainly not the case here. This is a 30mph single carriageway road in a residential area and there are several turnings off the road before the roundabout is reached. What is special about the roundabout as a hazard here? Of course, dangerous drivers might drive at high speed along this road and be caught out by the roundabout, but that could apply to any hazard such as a t-junction or pedestrian crossing. You don't normally see countdown markers for those. Again, depending on the sign's indicated colours, you will likely see these yards signs once you're close to the end of a particular point or a possible hazard. With the help of these signs, you can switch lanes ahead of time and make your exit from the motorway or junction smoothly.

Diagram 562 in Schedule 2 Part 2 of TSRGD 2016 is a warning sign of a danger ahead, and features an exclamation mark. A range of legends are prescribed for use on the white plate below.

My second issue is that this type of sign does not seem to be mentioned in the highway code. I've searched the "Know Your Traffic Signs" booklet from the DoT but can find only: The amendment will provide benefits in situations where the definition of the restricted zone is not well suited to fixed periods. For example, it will enable the zone restriction to be applied during school term times, but not during holidays. This has potential dual benefit of: The Business and Regulatory impact assessment is therefore focussed on the remaining proposals from the above section.

The proposed reduction in threshold, to require a minimum of parking plus at least one of public toilets and/or fuel during normal shop opening hours will enable more towns and villages (particularly in remote rural areas) to be signed, at the discretion of the road authority. This will benefit road users by highlighting valuable facilities, with positive impacts for businesses within the communities which may be signed as a result. Updating to the current symbol for this organisation (used on tourist information signs). Parking distance plates The incorporation of new LEZ signs and road markings within TSRGD will enable the LEZ schemes to be adequately signposted, in advance of entering the zone, on entry to the zone, within the zone and on exit. This will enable drivers to navigate the network effectively, and discourage vehicles from entering illegally. The introduction of these signs is considered essential to ensure road users are fully informed of the existence of LEZ schemes and provided with sufficient advance warning that these schemes are in operation. Besides being a rectangular road sign containing different counts of stripes or bars, yards signs also come in different colours to indicate something. Here's what you need to know about the yards sign below. Enabling pedestrian or pedestrian/cycle zones to be applied in situations where they would otherwise be unsuitable, and/or;

Triangle road signs are there to warn you about an upcoming hazard. If you see a triangular road sign, it’s warning you about something coming up, so generally it’s time to slow down and be on alert. Motorways in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland aren’t obliged to have them. If you break down, are involved in an incident, or see a vehicle in trouble, you can call the relevant authority and relay the information on the distance markers. The first number refers to the road you're on, and the second line will be either an A or a B, which indicates which way you're travelling. Finally, the third line tells you how far you are from a given location. Not only will this be more noticeable than a smaller sign, but it will also improve legibility and hence reading distance, The result is that these signs here are giving a countdown to something, without saying what the something is in a situation that is not described in the highway code. For example, if a lane is closed, this is indicated with a red ‘X’ over the top of it. Or if a lower speed limit is temporarily required, the sign will display a number contained in a red ring.Provisions within the 2022 Regulations and General Directions to ensure that existing signs already in place on the network will remain valid, even where they are superseded by the amendments. * Business and regulatory impacts are deemed to be negligible for the following proposals This symbol indicating a nature reserve managed by Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) was already authorised for use on tourist signs in England and Wales, and commonly used on Scottish signs with non-prescribed sign authorisation. The amendment will allow these facilities to be signed in Scotland without prior authorisation, at the discretion of the roads authority. Parking distance plates (amendment to existing sign) By adding electric vehicle charging points and motorhome servicing points to the items which may be included on the sign, important facilities can be identified which reflect the evolving needs of road users. RSPB symbol (new sign) Countdown markers to speed limits – warning of approach to restricted speed limit on approach to town or village A new sign to indicate the entry to a low emission zone, incorporating the LEZ symbol, and advising that cameras are in operation for the purposes of identifying contraventions of LEZ schemes. LEZ repeater sign

It is emphasised that the provision of signing will be at the discretion of the roads authority, and that the amendments do not mandate any changes. It is also noted that the 2022 Regulations and General Directions are to include the savings provision detailed in the above section to ensure that any existing sign on the network will remain current for as long as it remains in place. The four local authorities due to introduce LEZ (Aberdeen City, Dundee City, City of Edinburgh and Glasgow City) have been involved in discussions during the development of these signs. Local facilities sign (amendment to existing sign) Fluorescence can also be particularly effective in drawing attention to signs mounted in deep shadow, e.g. below overhanging trees.A white-coloured yards sign with red bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing a railway line that crosses a road. The SSI makes several amendments to Schedule 11 advisory signs, and also prescribes additional legends that can be used with the Schedule 2 hazard warning sign, Diagram 562 (exclamation mark). Distance to a speed limit commencing If you’re anything like us, you’re probably wondering what on earth ‘adverse camber’ means. It means the road is sloped to help drain away water. But as the big lorry on this road sign suggests, this does mean there’s a risk of lorries overturning. We’re going to cover the different types of road signs and what they mean.Pluswe’ll go through some of the most common and the most difficult road signs to get you ready for theory test day. Road sign shapes and colours As well as letting you know about imminent service stations, there are also signs that list the next few services along a route. This means you can make a judgement as to whether to stop at the next one, or carry on a bit further. If you make long journeys regularly, you'll soon work out your favourite stopping points. There are even national lists rating motorway services in the UK. Driver location signs
