The Wheel of Life (called the Bhavachakra in Sanskrit) represents the cycle of birth and rebirth and existence in samsara. It is highly recommended that you put some extra thought into what categories you would like to see in your Wheel of Life. There are many assessment questions you might want to ask when considering your overall happiness. In addition to the commonly used areas, here are some ideas for additional areas you can assess:

Yama, despite his awful appearance, is not an evil figure. On the contrary, in fact, Yama is completely devoted to protecting Buddhism and Buddhists. Buddhist legend states that Yama was once a holy man who believed that he would achieve enlightenment if he medicated in a cave for 50 years. In the 11th month of the 49th year, thieves entered the cave where Yama was meditating. The thieves stole a bull and cut off its head. It came to their attention that Yama had seen then, so the thieves cut off his head as well. Do you appreciate what you have and give thanks for the small things in your life? Is gratitude something you think about on a daily basis? Joy There are many versions of the Wheel of Life; they vary in the number and naming of segments and whether scoring is represented using a pie or a spider-web style. As you do this, ask yourself whether you feel these relationships are built on a good foundation or not? On the wheel of life worksheet, there is a section to add action items and steps you can take to improve your satisfaction in each area. The lower the score you got in each area the more action items you will include. For example, if you got a 4 in the finance category, then you will add 6 actions items (10-4=6). You add the number of steps required to bring each category to 10. Therefore, areas that have a higher score will have fewer items than those with a higher score. But just because it's such a familiar tool to us, we forget that most people have probably never even seen the wheel of life assessment! And if our client or workshop participant has seen the wheel before—that's great! It means they already know how to complete it, and you can spend more time delving into issues and brainstorming actions! So, for many coaches including myself, the wheel of life assessment is a key tool in their coaching practice. Buddhists believe that suffering is the true nature of all existence. While many of us may want to achieve a perfect score of 10 in each area, this is unrealistic and will likely only make us feel worse about ourselves as we pursue an impossibility. Instead, we would encourage you to think about what an ‘ideal’ score would be for each area. Another important thing to remember is: even when clients have done the Life Wheel before, their answers will likely be different today than when they last completed. Because remember, the Life Balance Wheel provides a snapshot of people's life satisfaction. And this changes over time—sometimes from one week to the next!

The Wheel of Life® shows how to bring balance to your life and create happiness and success. It originates from Tibetan Buddhism and focuses on eight components, which are also called happiness factors in human life.
