First up, it's worth making clear that this small dehumidifier has a low extraction rate compared to many others on our list. The ProBreeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier can extract just 0.5L of moisture from the air per day. For comparison, the lowest extraction rate offered within the MeacoDry Arete One range is 10L of moisture extraction per day. Yes, there is an option of a charcoal filter to remove smells and volatile organic compounds from the air We should point out that I took these sound readings using a smartphone app inside a home with wooden floors, and that sound levels will vary depending on your carpet, curtains and furnishings. Meaco’s own noise measurements, taken in a sealed chamber using calibrated microphones at 1m from all four sides, measured noise levels at between 38dB and 40dB for the 20L model and 40 and 42dB for the 25L model. On laundry mode, I put two loads of just cleaned washing on a clothes horse, letting the MeacoDry Arete One do its job. Once the laundry mode cycle had completed, the washing was dry. Performance can vary, depending on the relative humidity, the room in which you have the humidifier and the temperature. If you're wondering how to get rid of mould in a poorly ventilated room, or trying to combat excess moisture or humidity inside the home, then a dehumidifier can be a useful tool in your arsenal.

Whilst performance can vary when it comes to drying clothes due to factors like ambient room temperature and the type of fabrics you've washed, I tested the MeacoDry Arete One dehumidifier several times whilst drying washes and my washing was always airing-cupboard dry and ready to put away once the cycle had completed.

And there’s a simple but clever solution for pouring out the water. With Arete there are two spouts: one to the left and one to the right. So you can pour the water away without having to juggle or twist the tank. And, whilst this Russell Hobbs number is cheaper upfront, running costs are higher, with the 20L dehumidifier using 440W of energy compared to Meaco's 20L Arete One which uses 216W on average. Plus, the Arete One offers a built-in air purifier which this model does not. Smart Humidity Mode will be the one you use the most and, when pressed, it will set the target humidity levels to 55%. To test the unit, we set the target to 40%, as levels stood at 45% at the time. You can do this by repeatedly pressing the same button until the desired number flashes on the display. There is also CO mode, which just means your dehumidifier will run continuously. The unit isn't the lightest or most compact we've tested, but then we wouldn't expect that from a machine this powerful. However, built-in wheels, a retractable carry handle, and cable tidy make it easier to move around the house and store neatly away when it's not in use. Over the course of an hour, the humidity dropped by 2% to 43%, with a good amount of water collected in the water tank (it promises to remove up to 12L a day). It didn't take long after this to reach 40%, after which it automatically powered down.

Looking like a portable air conditioning unit, the MeacoDry Arete One is a fairly large box (562 x 376 x 232mm). Weighing 15kg (without water in it), it’s quite chunky, too, although the wheels make it easy to move around. Cleverly, you can even place the unit against a wall, and it will still work effectively. However, to help give an overview, here are some key facts it's useful to know before searching for the best dehumidifier for the task in hand. What are the main types of dehumidifier? The extensive feature set makes this the perfect dehumidifier for almost any home and can be deployed in any room as well as conservatories, garages, boats or caravans with exceptional performance. Power requirements change, too. The first example draws 179W, while the second one requires 211W. At the maximum draw, the MeacoDry Arete One uses 235W of power. That isn’t unusual for a compressor-based dehumidifier, working out at around 3.3p per hour. A dehumidifier's extraction rate is an average of how much moisture it can remove from the air during a given timeframe. Most commonly this is measured in litres per day, so an extraction rate of 10L/per day means the dehumidifier should be able to extract 10 litres of moisture within 24 hours if running continuously. In practice, this also depends on the humidity levels of the room, and the ambient temperature. The only quieter dehumidifiers I've come across are Peltier models, like the Pro Breeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier. However, Peltier dehumidifiers are far less powerful than compressor dehumidifiers. For comparison, as I discovered in my Pro Breeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier review, this Peltier model can only extract 0.5L of moisture from the air per day, compared to the MeacoDry Arete One range which can extract 10, 12, 20, or 25L of moisture per day!
